The contents pages for the last four volumes have been bound in together at the start of Volume XI.Washington Irving was an American author, essayist and historian best known for his short stories. In the course of his career his works were published under various pseudonyms, the most famous being Geoffrey Crayon, under which he published The Legend of Sleepy Hollow. He made his literary debut in 1802 and moved to England in 1915 where he achieved international fame. He is considered America's first genuine internationally best-selling author. Handsomely bound in half morocco with marbled boards and gilt detailing to the spines. Externally, very smart, with some general shelf wear and light rubbing to the extremities, particularly to the head of the front joints on Volumes II and XIV. A small amount of loss to the paper binding to the front board of Volume V. Bookplate of Francis Henry Jeune to the front pastedown of each volume. Internally, front hinges to Volumes II and VII are slightly tender. Remaining binding is firm throughout. A few spots to the first few pages of the odd volume, otherwise pages are bright and clean. Very Good Indeed. Bestandsnummer des Verkäufers 805J35
