William Makepeace Thackeray is best known for his satirical works looking at English society, most especially for 'Vanity Fair'. He tended to be quite savage in his attacks on society, publishing under various pseudonyms in his youth to avoid personal criticism. He took up journalism, something he had dabbled with in the past, and wrote art critiques, short sketches, and reviewed books. He started writing longer works of fiction and contributed to Punch magazine as well. In the latter part of his life he achieved greater acclaim for his work and was considered the equal of Charles Dickens. A lovely set of Thackeray's works. In half morocco bindings with paper covered boards. Externally, very smart with minor shelfwear to the joints and extremities. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are very bright.
