Beschreibung:

This is a jacketed British first edition, fifth printing of the second volume of Churchill's acclaimed history of the First World War. Of The World Crisis, Churchill bibliographer Frederick Woods wrote: "The volumes contain some of Churchill's finest writing, weaving the many threads together with majestic ease, describing the massive battles in terms which fitly combine relish of the literary challenge with an awareness of the sombre tragedy of the events." Churchill was in a special position to write this history, having served both in the Cabinet and on the front; Churchill was First Lord of the Admiralty until 1915 and then, after bearing blame for the Dardanelles tragedy, served as a lieutenant colonel leading a battalion in the trenches. Before war's end, Churchill was exonerated and rejoined the Government, but the stigma would linger. Churchill may have meant for his history of the First World War to clear his name, but his six volume masterwork far exceeds this purpose. It is in this second volume that Churchill provides his perspective on the disastrous Dardanelles offensive. The fifth printing of the British first edition occurred in 1927 and the binding is identical to that of the first printing. The only substantive changes to the contents are the addition of Appendix IV ("Lord Fisher's Resignation") and of course the notation of the four preceding printings on the copyright page. Of note, the dust jacket spine, front panel, and front flap are identical to that of the first printing. The rear panel contains advertisements for the 1911-1914 and 1916-1918 volumes, while the rear flap has a synopsis of Beaverbrook's Politicians and the War. Of note, unique among dust jackets for the six printings of the first edition that we have examined, this fifth printing dust jacket paper features a pronounced vertical line pattern evocative of laid paper. This copy approaches near fine condition in a very good plus dust jacket. The blue cloth binding is square, clean, bright, and tight with none of the scuffing endemic to unjacketed copies. We note only slight wear to spine ends and corners and a little blistering of the cloth along the front hinge. The contents are bright with a crisp, unread feel and no previous ownership marks. Differential toning to the endsheets corresponding to the dust jacket flaps confirms what the lovely binding already tells us - that this copy has spent life jacketed. Trivial spotting is confined to the top and fore edges. The dust jacket is complete apart from minor chipping at the spine ends and corners and shows modest spine toning. The dust jacket is protected in a removable, archival quality clear cover. Bibliographic reference: Cohen A69.2(II).e, Woods/ICS A31(ab2.5), Langworth p.105. Buchnummer des Verkäufers

Buchbeschreibung Bloomsbury Academic/Bloomsbury Publishing, 2015. Softcover. Zustand: New. First edition. The World Crisis is considered by many to be Winston S. Churchill`s literary masterpiece. Published across five volumes between 1923 and 1931, Churchill here tells the story of The Great War, from its origins to the long shadow it cast on the following decades. At once a history and a first-hand account of Churchill`s own involvement in the war, The World Crisis remains a compelling account of the conflict and its importance. The second volume of Churchill`s history covers 1915 ? the first full year of a conflict that most of the antagonists had expected to be over in a matter of months. Churchill here covers the intractable deadlock on the western front, the use of tanks and gas on the battlefields and the unsuccessful attempts by both sides to break through. In addition, Churchill also considers his own involvement in the Dardanelles campaign (Gallipoli). Printed Pages: 428. Bestandsnummer des Verkäufers 79432
