Artikelbeschreibung des Verkäufers

A very good copy of the 2nd Groombridge edition in the original decorative cloth binding with hand-coloured frontispiece and 13 further hand-coloured plates drawn by Mary Ward. A very scarce work. Mary Ward, born Mary King (1827-1869), was an extremely talented naturalist, scientific illustrator, astronomer and microscropist. Born in Co Offaly, she was fortunate in her family connection to the scientific community and, although she was not allowed to study formally, or attend university, she was encouraged and supported from an early age. Her cousin, William Parsons, 3rd Earl of Rosse was constructing a large reflecting telescope at his home, Birr Castle, and she visited regularly - making drawings of the different stages which were used much later to reconstruct it. She made drawings of the insects she found using a hand lens which led to her father purchasing her a high quality Ross microscope. Her first attempt at publishing was to put together some drawings and text from her work on the microscope - producing 250 copies privately. The book was a success and attracted the attention of Groombridge and Sons who first published a revised version in 1858. This copy is the second issue of 1859 and the work was so popular that it went through 8 printings between 1858 and 1880. This copy is in a very bright binding with gilt illustration and titles to the front board, gilt titles to the spine, and blind stamped decoration to the back board. The front board has a tiny bump to the bottom corner tip and the top corner tip is slightly frayed. The spine is darkened with chipping and loss to the cloth at the top and bottom. The back board has a bump to the bottom corner and a slight inward turn to the top corner. All page edges are gilted. The original pale yellow endpapers are present without inscription - there is some darkening to the top edge of the front free endpaper. The contents are complete with tissue-guarded frontispiece, title, preface and text, written as a series of letter, pp 1-56 with 13 further plates. 8 pp of adverts to the rear. It is very clean internally with the occasional light spot or mark. There is offsetting from the frontispiece to its tissue guard and some offsetting from plates to text. The more strongly coloured images can sometimes show through to the verso of the plates. The final leaf of the adverts has a small hole at the outside edge. Please enquire if you would like to see additional images.…

Shopbeschreibung

We are a small online bookselling business specialising in rare and unusual books, generally published before 1900, with a focus on natural history, history, illustrated works and some literature. We are based in the beautiful Orkney Islands and have a specialist Orkney/Shetland section in our listings. We run a bookshop in Orkney - Birsay Books - where we have a wide range of stock from science fiction and fantasy to maritime and, of course, Orkney/Shetland and Scottish material. We take images of all of our books to supplement the online descriptions, and are always happy to provide more on request. When you order from us, we ensure that books are properly packed to protect their condition and we always use recorded or 'signed for' postal services for additional security. Because we are based on an island which depends on ferries and flights for shipping, we can not guarantee 'next day' delivery. We will simply get your purchase to you as quickly and safely as we can.…
