"Since the seventeenth century, artists everywhere have been fascinated by yachts. Whether drawn to the vigor of ocean racing or the quiet nostalgia of cruising, they have found the yacht to be a rich and relentless artistic source. Truly international in its scope, 'Yachts on Canvas' reproduces the finest achievements of some of the world's leading maritme artists. Rendering in a variety of media, including oil, watercolor, pen-and-ink and collage, these images expose the drama and romance that have for so long been associated with yachting life. From the Dutch van de Veldes and their elaborate portraits of seventeenth-century yachts, to the fresh and animated modes of the British contemporaries, Vaughn and Dews, this book spans various styles, times and nationalities." 144 full-color and black-and-white illustrations (many double-page) with accompanying descriptive captions. 9 chapters: The Early Years of Yachting; Royal Yachts: from Sail to Steam; Yacht Racing: the Quest for Speed; The Schooner Yacht America; Nineteenth-Century Yachting: Deck Scenes and Races; Nineteenth-Century Yacht Portraits; The Art of Yachting Illustration; Yachting Nostalgia. 160 pages. "James Taylor's comprehensive text accompanies the compositions. In additon to providing a detailed study alongside each image, the author also presents a chronological history of the yacht. Bonhams, Christie's, Sotheby's, the New York Yacht Club, the Royal Cork Yacht Club and the Royal Yacht Squadron have all contributed towards the collation of these paintings, many of which have never before been published. Not since the 1920s has a serious study of yachting art been undertaken, and never before has such a book been as diverse and international in its selection."
