Full leather with gilt title on spine Front cover detached and showing some wear at spine ends and edges but else in good condition for its age Text is in very good to excellent condition throughout, with just slight age toning Foldout frontispiece is present and undamaged Captain Philip Thicknesse (1719 â " 1792) was an English author, eccentric, and friend of the artist Thomas Gainsborough He wrote several travel guides, including this one He was a friend of the society artist Thomas Gainsborough, and of his less well-known brother, the inventor Humphrey Gainsborough As an author he wrote for The Gentleman's Magazine He also published The Speaking Figure and the Automaton Chess Player, Exposed and Detected, a none-too-accurate exposà of a chess-playing machine, The Turk Thicknesse died on a journey near Boulogne, Pas-de-Calais, France, and was buried there In his later life he had become an "ornamental hermit" His will stipulated that his right hand be cut off and delivered to his son, George, who was inattentive, "to remind him of his duty to God after having so long abandoned the duty he owed to a father, who once so affectionately loved him" Provenance: Estate of Russell Johanson, Ravenna Rare Books, Seattle, Wa 392 pp. Bestandsnummer des Verkäufers AA611
