This VG, format #1 (as per Mattson & Davis: Street & Smith, 7-1/2", gold lettering on spine) is square, very clean and only slightly worn: it has lightly bumped front corners and spine ends, all without fabric damage; a small ding at the top of the rear board; slight loss of black paint on lower front corner. But the front panel illustration is still really quite eye-catching. All in all, not bad for being 115+ years old! On the FFEP, there is a partially obliterated inked name and the date (May 3, 1904) and a purple inked stamp: "EX LIBRIS / Clarence ??? / San Francisco" (see photo); other than those marks of identity, the interior is free of writing, stray marks, stains of any type and page damage of any sort. The paper is lightly toned and very flexible. Hinges are strong and not damaged in any way. Mattson & Davis claim that this Street & Smith edition is supposed to have a frontis + 3; this book (and one other that I have) has a frontis only, with no evidence that any other illustrations had ever been present.
