Inhaltsangabe: The second volume of Mr. Ehrman's trilogy is a collection of essays, not on Pitt but on what may be thought of as his context, or "times". The "times" are roughly the years from 1789 to 1796, a dismal slice of Pitt's career. Includes a detailed and mainly narrative account of the war and the negotiations before and during it, hampered at every stage by communications that could not keep pace with continually changing situations in France and the rest of Europe. Pitt's misjudgments are well known: his stubborn belief that the war would be short because France was on the verge of internal collapse and his attempt to treat the war as a continuation of the colonial struggle with France.
