Zaehnsdorf signature printed on verso of each front free endpaper. Marbled endpapers. All edges gilt. With engraved armorial Prize labels in each of the front paste down endpapers of the 1906 Gladstone Memorial Prize (for economics, political science and history) awarded to Harry James Cape. Pages slightly discoloured through age. 15 x 22 cm. Beautifully bound in full cerise calf; an impressive signed prize Zaehnsdorf binding. Spines in six compartments with raised bands and twin green morocco gilt lettered labels and the date "1906" in gilt at the foot of each one. All four boards bear the central gilt embossed armorial shield design of Gladstone within a single gilt ruled border. Inner gilt scroliate dentelles. Two small scratches on the upper cover of volume two. The spines slightly sunned. A biography of the famous British Liberal statesman. In a career lasting over sixty years, he served as Prime Minister four separate times (1868-74, 1880-5, February-July 1886 and 1892-4), more than any other leader. Gladstone was also Britain's oldest Prime Minister, 84 years old when he resigned for the last time. He had additionally served as Chancellor of the Exchequer four times. Gladstone's first ministry saw many reforms including Disestablishment of the Church of Ireland and the introduction of secret voting. In 1908 Harry James Cape was co-author of the Schola Regia Cantuariensis: A History of Canterbury School. Commonly Called the King's School published by Mitchell, Hughes, & Clarke. From 1916-37 Harry James Cape, M.A., B.A., B.Sc. was Headmaster at the Colchester Royal Grammar School, a state-funded grammar school in Colchester, Essex. It was founded in 1128 and was later granted two royal charters - by Henry VIII in 1539 and by Elizabeth I in 1584. Gladstone Memorial Prize was an anuual prize of £250 administered by the University of Cambridge that was established by the Gladstone Memorial Trust in 1901 and was given to the Tripos student who submitted the best dissertation.
