Thick 8vo. (22 x 14 cm). pp.xxvii+523. Publisher's original green cloth, spine lettered in gilt, map endpapers, in the unclipped pink dust-jacket. An excellent copy. Second edition, first published in 1977. "Based largely on the archives of the British Cabinet and Foreign Office and also on sources in Arabic and other languages, this comprehensive study records painstakingly and thoroughly the history of Anglo-Arab relations in its entirety for the first time, from the British overtures in 1914 to the Cairo conference under Churchill in 1921. While the political and military developments in Arabia, Iraq, Lebanon, Syria and Palestine are lucidly chronicled and brilliantly analysed, there are throughout the book special sections on the political fortunes of Palestine. Towards the end of the book these predominate. The last chapter in particular contains important revelations on Herbert Samuel and T. E. Lawrence. In the course of years of patient research the author uncovered and placed in chronological sequence from 1915 to 1921 some ten British authoritative interpretations of the 'McMahon Pledge'. Their cumulative evidence lends powerful support to the author's conclusions that up to 1921 Palestine was covered by the British promise to the Sharif of Mecca to recognise and support Arab independence, that Palestine was expressly excluded only after that date to justify accomplished political facts, and that this exclusion was based on an erroneous interpretation of McMahon by a single official, temporary and very junior at that! On this as on other problems the author reaches his conclusions without dramatisation or rhetorical flourish. We quote from his preface: 'One of the aims of this book is to establish order in place of half a century of chaos. Allowing for human error, I vouchsafe the accuracy of the facts and take full responsibility for my understanding of them. I am in distinguished British company when I maintain that British policy regarding Palestine from 1917 onwards constituted an injustice to the Arabs. That policy has now become history, and I traced its genesis and development up to 1921 in the perspective of history'" (dust-jacket). Dr. Abdul Latif Tibawi (1910-1981), B.A., Ph.D., D.Litt. was a Palestinian historian and educationalist. He held high administrative and academic posts in Palestine and in the universities of Harvard and London. He published several studies on the history and education of the Middle East, some of which were translated into Arabic, Persian, French, German and Italian. Bestandsnummer des Verkäufers 62703
