Prior owner name stamp to top margin of front free-endpaper and to title page, where the author's name is underlined. Otherwise, apart from very slight age toning, a very good copy - clean and unmarked - of this exceptionally scarce edition. OCLC (No. 612633023) locates only one copy of a reprint, and no copies of this 1928 first Burns Oates edition at institutions worldwide. ~ZZ~ Volume 16 (of what was eventually 22 volumes) of the 'little Orchard' series of Catholic devotional/mystical works issued by the British publisher Burns Oates in the 1920s, most of which - like this volume - were new editions by renowned English Roman Catholic scholars of their time. In this case, the English translation was by T.B. Gent, and first published at Doway in 1616. It includes an introduction by Jesuit James Broderick. Saint Robert Bellarmine, S.J. (1542-1621) was an Italian Jesuit and a Cardinal of the Catholic Church. He was one of the most important figures in the Counter-Reformation. During his retirement, he wrote several short books intended to help ordinary people in their spiritual life, including this work, De ascensione mentis in Deum per scalas rerum creatorum opusculum (The Mind's Ascent to God, 1614).
