Growing up in Minnesota, I spent many long, cold winters making up stories, dreaming about becoming a writer, and traveling the world. Yes...big imagination. But saner people urged me to attend the University of Minnesota where I studied behavioral science...and I married and had a family. But my dream of becoming a writer persisted, and after moving to Arizona, I earned a degree in journalism from Arizona State University. Since then, I've worked in a plethora of jobs from social services to magazine editor, and teaching novel writing at Bootcamp for Novelists. Oh...and writing lots of books--fifteen novels, sold worldwide and in many different languages, and two non-fiction books on how to write a novel.

Since my first sale in 1999, my books have won several awards, including the Daphne du Maurier Award, and most recently, the Holt Medallion Award of Merit. When not writing, or teaching writing, I travel wherever and whenever I can, take photographs, play tennis, and spend a bunch of time researching my books...sometimes in intimate wine bistros with live blues music. Or I'll grab my camera and head for a hike in the mysterious Arizona mountains, the best place on the planet to dream up new stories...and marvel that someone actuallly pays me to have so much fun.
