Brossura. Zustand: new. A cura di Mevoli D. Roma, 2019; br., pp. 140, cm 17x24. (Temi e Testi. 180). Libro.

Zustand: NUOVO. Firenze, Olschki Ed. cm 17 x 24, iv-316 pp. con 7 figg. n.t., brossura Biblioteca dell''«Archivum Romanicum». Serie I: Storia, Letteratura, Paleografia,465.

Zustand: Very Good. [6], 112 leaves ; 4⁰. Signatures: [superscript pi]A⁴ [superscript pi]B² A-2E⁴. Collated complete. Binding later calf, scuffed and rebacked, with chipping to head of spine, title page soiled with skillful repairs to upper margin, preliminaries with early faded stain. Interior largely clean other tha…n old tidemark to outer margin of pp. 1-24, not affecting text, and from 84-end in upper margin (faded), several crude early manuscript manicules (hand/finger drawings) to a few leaves, last page slightly soiled, and slightly trimmed to head of text block touching a few running headings. Otherwise, a very nice, complete copy of a very scarce Protestant work. This is the rare, first English translation of a popular Protestant work that circulated widely in Europe under the title Pasquillus Ectaticus, first published in 1544. It's an early example of Reformation-era, polemical literature, combining satire, dialogue, and theological argument, with its aim to expose "the crafty conveyances of Antichrist." Pasquine is imagined as falling into a trance and receiving revelations about Heaven, Purgatory, and Hell, through which Catholic doctrine—especially the authority of Rome—is sharply attacked. The work is attributed to Celio Secondo Curione (1503-1569), an Italian humanist and Protestant reformer who fled Catholic Italy and became a leading voice of the Swiss Reformation. Curione's writings were banned in Catholic territories, but they circulated widely in Protestant Europe, where they were known for their classical learning, satire, and religious argument. The book was printed in London by William Seres, one of the most important Protestant printers of Elizabethan England, reinforced here by the statement that the book was "Seen allowed according to the order appointed in the Queenes Maiesties Iniunctions." The text also explicitly references the Council of Trent (1545-1563), placing it squarely within the Catholic Counter-Reformation. The work can be framed in a few sections: Pasquine's Trance, where Pasquine's perception of truth is heightened to enable him to claim divine or moral authority. His revelations of Heaven, Purgatory, and Hell, which is the core of the book. Heaven is reserved for the genuinely faithful and is inaccessible through Catholic indulgences and papal authority. Purgatory is depicted as a human invention to obtain clerical power, and this section directly attacks indulgences and all other economic motivations of the late medieval Catholic Church. And Hell contains not only obvious sinners but corrupt clergy too. The Learned Christian Dialogue is a dialogue between Pasquine and a "Christian" interlocutor who interprets and explains what has been seen, basing the visions in scripture and theological reasoning. Finally, in the section of Questions Proposed for the Council of Trent, the questions challenge Catholic positions on justification, purgatory, and ecclesiastical authority, often posed or asked to be unanswerable without contradiction.

Brossura. Zustand: new. Libro.

In den WarenkorbIn-8° (14.2x9.5 cm). (12), 257, (3) pp. Legatura novecentesca in piena pergamena. While serving as professor of humanist letters at the University of Pavia, he converted to Protestantism. In 1542, he fled to Switzerland to escape religious persecution and settled in Basel, where he became a leading figure among the Italian religious refugees and a vocal advocate of religious tolerance. His notable works include Pasquillus extaticus (1542), a satirical critique of corruption within the Roman Church, and De amplitudine beati regni Dei (1554), written in opposition to John Calvin's doctrine of predestination. The term "pasquinade" derives from Pasquino (Latin: Pasquillus), the nickname of an ancient statue in Rome's Parione district. Since its rediscovery in 1501, Romans have affixed anonymous satirical verses to it, mocking the Papal government and denouncing social injustices, thus making Pasquino the first of the city's famed "talking statues". In his Pasquillorum tomi duo, Curione compiled and partially translated into Latin a wide selection of these texts - prose, verse, and dialogues - that had appeared on the bases of the talking statues during the first half of the sixteenth century. To this material he added texts from the Northern European anti-curial tradition, as well as his own compositions, including Pasquillus extaticus et Marphorius, a poetic dialogue between Pasquino and another of Rome's talking statues, Marforio (pp. 427-529). The volume includes eulogies of Martin Luther (notably pp. 282-295), Ulrich von Hutten's satirical Trias Romana in both Latin and German (pp. 192 ff.), and the Julius exclusus e coelis, a pointed satire traditionally attributed to Erasmus (pp. 317-324).Adams P-390; Brunet IV, col. 410 "peu commun".
