Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. First Edition. (no dust jacket, probably as issued) [modest shelfwear, small stain on front cover, slight fraying to cloth at spine ends, one-time owner's name in ink at top of front endpaper]. Although one might reasonably expect this to be the screenplay for the 1939 film of the same name (with Spencer Tracy as Stanley), in fact it's another animal altogether. First, it's primarily in prose form -- essentially a longish treatment (77 pages), or perhaps we could call it a novellazation. Secondly, the writers credited here -- Sam Hellman and Hal Long -- were not the credited screenwriters on the finished film (Philip Dunne and Julien Josephson). Wikipedia (quoting Dunne) summarizes the production history thus: "The film was originally envisioned as a vehicle for Tyrone Power as Stanley with the script prepared accordingly. Darryl F. Zanuck, head of production at 20th Century Fox was sent a memo suggesting the project be changed to be about a more cynical Stanley who looks for Livingstone as a publicity stunt, then becomes idealistic after meeting him. Zanuck agreed and got Dunne and Julien Josephson to rewrite it." This narrative presumably, then, reflects that earlier conception of the film, but leaves this question unanswered: what would have been the impetus for the studio to publish this item at all? I've seen it speculated that it was issued as a "promotional" item for the film, but in my opinion the very plain format and design doesn't support such a conclusion. (Who would have been the target audience for such a thing? Not the public, a full two years before the film itself was ready for release. And the studio wouldn't have been looking to attract "investors"; that's just not how things worked back then.) A Foreword -- which appears to have been tipped in; an afterthought? -- briefly relates the factual background for the script and movie.

Hardcover. Zustand: Good. Book has light wear to the edges, hinges, and corners, with light fading to the spine. Light rubbing to the covers and a former owner inserted their own reading key in front of the cover page. There is intermitten marginalia, small symbils that link to the key at the beginning. Otherwise, this is a good reading copy that remains well-bound with bright pages that are crisp.

Trade Paperback. Zustand: Near Fine. Book is in excellent condition with a tiny bit of shelf wear only. Binding is solid and square, covers have sharp corners, exterior shows no blemishes, text/interior is clean and free of marking of any kind. seventy cartoonist, 256 pages comics in b&w. One of the raunchiest, nastiest, funniest collections of comics to come out in one volume I have seen. Born as a fund-raiser to a legal dispute between Ted Rall and Danny Hellman in which Rall criticized Art Spiegelman and Hellman responded by sending a "silly parodic email seen by less than 30 people" for which Rall sued for defamation. The book is filled with outlandishly rude comics featuring animal sex, intercourse of all kinds, scatology, crime, murder, many many rude drawings. Includes Mike Diana's Zero Tolerance, A True Comic, lavishly illustrated about his prosecution for drawing Boiled Angel comics, back cover by Spiegelman, multiple comics by Tony Millionaire featuring a severed penis in the Arctic Circle, barf, ape sex with floozies, etc. Contributors to the fund include Hellman, Danny (ed.) Crumb, Robert; Robert Williams, Spain Rodriguez, Kim Deitch, Jay Lynch, Gary Panter, Mary Fleener, Art Spiegelman, Leslie Sternbergh, Adam Alexander, Sam Henderson, Tony Millionaire, Mike Kupperman, Kevin Hein, Sharon Hyland, Leela Corman, Robert Cook, John Terhorst, Gregory Benton, John Roberson, Rupert Bottenberg, Bob Sikoryak, Jennifer Gonzalez, Sean Taggart, Andrew Krents & Anthony Motta, Gary Panter, Johnny Ryan Sam Henderson, Victor Cayro, P. Zustand: Collectible. FIRST. FINE. Green cloth boards, gold titling on cover and spine. Great treatment for the acclaimed movie starring Spencer Tracy and Cedric Hardwicke. This was one of 20th Century Fox's promotional devices in 1937 that prefaced the financing, production, shooting and publicity for the film prior to its release in 1939. The book is a scarce surviving memento of that style of Hollywood endorsement and prepublication done in the 1930's. [B045].
