Born and raised in Tiplersville, Mississippi, author Jean Armor Thornton (1920-2010) was a religious writer and Church of Christ minister - the latter occupation being the reference for the titular "sky pilot" term rather than one being an aviator. Thornton graduated from Tippah County schools and earned degrees from Freed-Hardeman College (now Freed-Hardeman University in Henderson, Tennessee) and Delta State Teachers College (now Delta State University in Cleveland, Mississippi). Church of Christ Thornton delivered his first gospel sermon at the age of 18 and, after college, preached in Lamar County (Alabama) and thereafter at various locales in north Mississippi including Itawamba County, Sunflower County, Alcorn County, and Prentiss County as well as conducting religious debates and radio evangelizing. OCLC indicates that a second edition was published in 1997 (albeit with a lone institutional holding); OCLC locates copies of this 1947 first edition at nine member institutions of which only two - Hernando First Regional Library and Delta State University - are in Mississippi.…
