My Life

I am now at the peak of my life. As I look back, I see an unfathomable depth. But, at the same time, I am exhilarated viewing the sweeping, majestic beauty below me. I consider myself blessed to have attained this height.

When I was climbing up to this age, there were moments filled with actions and reactions, thoughts and emotions, anecdotes and stories – as I have narrated in my memoirs. Those moments – both fulfilling and heart-rending – then appeared as isolated events. But now in retrospect I find, like a jigsaw puzzle, how they fit into each other, making my life a perfect whole.

Lasting Bond

One of the things everyone has in common is mutual bond. Everyone relates oneself to the members of his families; fellow students and friends made during childhood; schoolteachers and university professors; colleagues and peers; sport-mates, roommates and even strangers met at a crossroads.

Over the years, I have exchanged thoughts and ideas with many who have become part of my life. Here I want to share with you one of the most profound notes I ever received from a friend, Daniel Davis, whom I first met at a crossroads back in 1980 when I was a student at the University of Texas at Austin.

Dear Mohammad,

Thank you for your email. I have been thinking of you lately and was intending to write. I remember my last email, where I tried to outline my understanding of your world view as communicated in your memoirs The Landscape of a Mind.

As I recall what I wrote in the outline, my thoughts are that I did not do our friendship justice. Your book is a tremendous blessing to me, not because I am converted to your world view, but because of the celebration of friendship that I see recorded. Over the years we have had wonderful exchanges of thoughts. It seems that God has provided us with the basis of respecting the honor and dignity of each other’s views. I thank you so much for your commitment to our ever-lasting bond.
