Gerhard Steingress was born in Salzburg in 1947 and lives in Seville (Spain). He studied Economic and Social Sciences in Linz (Austria) and received his PHD from the University of Klagenfurt (1980). Between 1974 and 2013 he was a sociology professor, first at the University of Klagenfurt and later at the University of Sevilla (Spain). Since 1986, his investigation work is dedicated among other things to the sociology of music and culture, focussing especially the significance of ethnic music styles in the era of globalisation. As an author of numerous publications on Andalusian flamenco, his critical contributions are considered to be of very much importance for the contemporary theoretical and empirical investigation on flamenco. In 1991 he won the Award on Flamenco Investigation of the Fundación Andaluza de Flamenco with his initial monographic study with the title of "Sociología del cante flamenco".
