Martin Ehala

My research interests lie at the intersection of language sociology, social psychology and semiotics, with the focus on the theory of collective identity. I am elaborating a framework that explicates the mechanisms of group formation and sustainability, collective action, and intergroup relations as the function of collective identity. Empirically, my work is based on fieldwork on interethnic relations in the Post Soviet societies, as well as the analysis of secondary research on a wide range of intergroup settings around the world. My main affiliation is at the University of Tartu in Estonia, but until 2020 I have a visiting professorship in the University of Helsinki (Finland).
