The Author, Annette Johnson is a lifelong jazz fan.
When she met Freeman in a Paris jazz club, she recognized him as belonging to another world of jazz, they became fast friends, she interviewed him and that Interview became this book.
He was an alumnus of Wilberforce Collegians of Wilberforce University, an important jazz band formed in 1926, as were Benny Carter, Ben Webster, Frank Foster and many others. He played with Thelonious Monk, Elmo Hope, Sonny Stitt among others.
The book is written as a screenplay given texture by verbatim quotes from the Interview, full of jazz slang and improvisational story telling.
