When we think of the pulse in cinema, we may think of the heartbeat of the spectator as they respond to affective or moving scenes in the film, or how fast-paced and shocking images exacerbate this affective response. Conceptually extending cinema spectatorship, The Pulse in Cinema contends that cinema is an energetic arrangement of affective and intense forces, where the image and the spectator are specific components. Analysing body horror films such as The Tingler (1959), Dawn of the Dead (1978) and The Beyond (1981), this book builds on Lyotards concept of the dispositif, Deleuzes work on sensation and Batailles economic theory to conceptualise a pulse in cinema, arguing for its importance in cinema spectatorship theory. The Pulse in Cinema acknowledges that the pulse is "felt" in the body, yet also argues that the pulse has a wider reaching effect in cinema than simply the physiological response of the spectator to the image its the affective force in cinema. Paperback. Zustand: new. Paperback. Sound Affects: A Users Guide is a collection of sonically-charged concepts ranging from those felt, heard and repeated (silence, the oriental riff, shuffle), to the vocal (whispers, sing, the disembodied voice), to sounds at the threshold (tin/ny, thump, buzz) to sounds beyond the limits of audibility (inaudible tremors, distortion, sub-bass). Sound Affects invites the reader to reflect on the ways that sounds produce affects and the ways that affects can operate as sound. Each of the entries develops a particular perspective on sound and affect through a close analysis of audiovisual and/or sonic objects. The objects chosen not only illustrate the concept in question but also demonstrate how the object encourages us to rethink the relationships between sounds and affects. Influenced by the sound theory of Eugenie Brinkema (2011), the concepts of Sound Affects plot the shift in volume from silence that opens up a space to be heard to the audibly near, from the audibly near to sounds beyond the limits of audibility. Sound Affects is an intellectual adventure for those who theorize and listen. The book can also be enjoyed as a narrative of sounds, its absences and its shifting intensities. "A philosophical analysis of sonically charged concepts to map a theory of "sound affects.""-- Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.…
