Printed by and sold through the Al Jihad Library in Assiut. 23, (1)pp Arabic text + (2)pp full page maps + (2)pp b/w photos. Wraps fair only, chipped to the corners (not affecting text). Interiors good, creased to the corners. This was prepared by two staff members at the Assiut Institute, presumably for their students in conformity with the latest curriculum issued at Al Azhar in Cairo in 1355-56 AH (1936-8). Two laws governing Al Azhar's educational structure had just been introduced. The first (1930) had split its school into 3 departments (Arabic, Sharia, and Theology), each involving formal examinations to earn a degree. The second (1936) was physical, moving the school's main office out of the Mosque and into a new building across the street, with further structures later added to supplement the three departmental buildings. Mustafa Al Maraghi, in his second term as Rector during 1935-45, introduced a series of modernising reforms in the Mosque and its school including the introduction of new programmes. Al Maraghi was a follower of Abu Hanifa (the Hanafi School of Islamic jurisprudence), whom this work also follows. It explains two of the five Pillars of Islam, namely Zakat (or charitable giving), and the significance and performance of Hajj. The maps show the routes taken by Egyptian pilgrims, and the road from the Masjid al-Haram to Arafat with important locations en route. The photos show the Mataf centred on the Kaaba, and the Prophet's Mosque in Medina. This appears to be very rare.
