It began as a thesis for the Fellowship of the Library Association and was submitted in August 1984. Twelve years is a long time to overhaul a thesis, and that at a time of great technological change in the supply of information; had I been starting to do so now, this would probably have been a different work, in a different format. The research was carried out in Glasgow, London, Oxford and during brief visits to Germany and North America. I am grateful for access at all the libraries which I visited and to all those which supplied materials on inter-library loan. Two libraries must be mentioned for special reasons. The British Library has been particularly accommodating in allowing me to consult its rich resources. There must be occasions when staff fetching books or at the North Library Gallery desk have sighed at seeing the same name, only partly legible, on application after application; but they have been unfailingly helpful. The Institute of Classical Studies Library has come to seem almost a second home in London.
