Hardcover. Zustand: Near Fine. 1st Edition. This is a first edition (1994) of the Reader's Digest edition of Captains Courageous: A Story of the Grand Banks, by the English writer Rudyard Kipling. It is about a boy who is rescued from drowning off Newfoundland's Grand Banks, and how he survives trials and adventures. It was originally published in installments in 1896-1897 and is the only Kipling novel set in North America. It was originally illustrated by the American daguerreotypist Isaiah West Taber, and all of his illustrations are in this book. 164 pages. It never had a dust jacket--it's pale green boards with gilt lettering and a gilt design on the cover. The original owner read to page 25, dog-eared it, and didn't return to it. One cardboard card is trimmed to the size of the mounted photograph 7 by 9 inches, minor light scattered foxing, discoloration in the foreground of one, otherwise quite nice condition. Isaiah West Taber moved into 121 Post Street in 1893, and was there until his studio was destroyed in 1906, along with all his negatives and printed - so from what I have researched these are unique images. I bought them from an estate sale down the street from the defunct St. Francis Riding Club on 7th Avenue, and suspect the photos were taken in Golden Gate Park nearby, probably in about 1900. The African American men are neatly and uniformly dressed, and probably retained by the family to care for the horses, a task commonly assigned them. Price is for all three photographs.…

Card: 5-5/16" x 8-3/8" This an image of the original Palace Hotel, which "was built by San Francisco banker and entrepreneur William Chapman Ralston, who heavily depended on his shaky banking empire to help finance the $5 million project. Although Ralston's Bank of California collapsed in late August 1875, and Ralston himself drowned in San Francisco Bay on the same day that he lost control of the institution, it did not interfere with the opening of the Palace Hotel two months later on October 2, 1875. Ralston's business partner in the project was U.S. Senator William Sharon, who had helped cause the collapse of the bank when he dumped his stock in the Comstock Lode. Sharon ended up in control of the hotel as well as both the bank and Ralston's debts, both of which he paid off at just pennies on the dollar. With 755 guest rooms, the original Palace Hotel (also known colloquially as the "Bonanza Inn") was at the time of its construction the largest hotel in the Western United States. At 120 feet in height, the hotel was San Francisco's tallest building for over a decade. The skylighted open center of the building featured a Grand Court overlooked by seven stories of white columned balconies which served as an elegant carriage entrance. Shortly after 1900 this area was converted into a lounge called the "Palm Court". The bartender, William "Cocktail" Boothby, was a fixture at the hotel for some years. The hotel featured large redwood-paneled hydraulic elevators which were known as "rising rooms". Each guest room or suite was equipped with a private bathroom as well as an electric call button to summon a member of the hotel's staff. All guest rooms could be joined together to create suites, or to make up large apartments for long-term residents, and the parlor of each guest room featured a large bay window overlooking the street below." [Wiki] This grand dame of San Francisco would not survive the 1906 quake, succumbing to the fires that ravaged so much of the city. Sligh yellowing to image, and a slight bow to the card. Mount: 5-11/16" x 8-1/4" The San Jaun Capistrano mission "was founded in 1776, by Spanish Catholics of the Franciscan Order. Named for Giovanni de Capistrano, a 15th-century theologian and 'warrior priest' who resided in the Abruzzo region of Italy, San Juan Capistrano has the distinction of being home to the oldest building in California still in use, a chapel built in 1782. Known alternately as 'Serra's Chapel' and 'Father Serra's Church,' it is the only extant structure where it has been documented that Junipero Serra celebrated Mass. One of the best known missions in Alta California, and one of the few missions to have actually been founded twiceâ"others being Mission San Gabriel Arcángel and Mission La PurÃsima Concepcià n." [Wiki] A curious gathering of these 3 images, obviously not a commercial mount, with the 3rd image [Palm Trees], having been cropped, with loss. The first time we've ever seen such a format. Most of the images in the album are the work of an unidentified but skilled amateur who traveled through Southern California circa 1891. The compositions of the photographs are of a high order and go far beyond the typical amateur productions often seen in albums from this time. A few of the photographs (mainly those related to northern California, especially the Lick Observatory), are cabinet card-size prints from the famed San Francisco photographic establishment of Isaiah West Taber.San Diego Floods of 1891Some of the San Diego photos were almost certainly taken either in February or the summer of 1891, when major storms flooded towns throughout the county. During the summer of 1891, a thunderstorm inundated parts of the San Diego Mountains with 11.5 inches of rain in 80 minutes. In February 1891, San Diego County experienced what many call the most violent storm in its history. It started to rain on February 19 and continued for a solid week: 30 inches in 37 hours in Escondido to the north; 18 inches in 48 at Cuyamaca to the east. By the 23rd, every road in the county had been damaged; a flash flood twisted the California Southern railroad line from Temecula station to Fallbrook so far beyond recognition it had to be abandoned.Rare Tia Juana (San Ysidro) ViewsA flooded town scene photograph in the present album shows the offices of Messinger & Lane, a mercantile business operating on the San Diego side of the Mexico Border, within in the community now known as San Ysidro. At the time there were only 34 residents in Tia Juana. The firm's name is listed in the Tia Juana section of the 1889-90 edition of Monteith's Directory of San Diego and Vicinity, as are the two partners, Joseph Messinger and William Lane. In 1866, William Lane, a native of Wales, purchased 160 acres at the border crossing and also entered into a general merchandise business. Messinger & Lane also appear 3 times in the National City Record in the 1890s. Intriguingly, in April 1890, the proprietors were reportedly arrested and taken to Los Angeles on charges of smuggling Mexican cigars and liquor. The San Diego Union reported on April 29, 1890: "Mr. Lane was discharged and Mr. Messenger [sic] was released under bonds to await the action of the Grand Jury." By September 24, 1891, the firm was noted as in the process of moving its store to "the new townsite" in Tia Juana (perhaps following the flooding shown in the photograph). The five or six original photographs of Tia Juana, especially the image showing the flooding of business and shops, stand as among the earliest extant photographs of the border section of San Diego. Suite of Fine 19th-century Photographs of California, New Mexico and Colorado Collected by a Traveler to Remember Their Visit in 1889  An evocative collection of 35 beautiful photographs of California and the W. 35 original albumen photographs, uniformly mounted on 12 x 10 inch card stock. Very minor fading to a few of the images. Occasional light discoloration to mounts. The photographs exhibit beautiful tonality. Overall condition is near fine. Suite of Fine 19th-century Photographs of California, New Mexico and Colorado Collected by a Traveler to Remember Their Visit in 1889 An evocative collection of 35 beautiful photographs of California and the West by noted western photographers, Isaiah Taber, Norman Reed, and William Henry Jackson. In remarkably nice condition, both the photographs and the uniform-sized card mounts. The pencil dates on the verso of the mounts record the time the unnamed owner of these prints visited the place depicted. The traveler visited Santa Barbara in early March 1889, then San Francisco from March 23 to April 2. By mid April they were in Colorado and New Mexico. Taber was particularly savvy about marketing his photographs to well-heeled tourists visiting San Francisco. Purportedly he installed direct phone lines in the best San Francisco hotels in order to have instantaneous communication with potential customers, who could then be invited into his gallery and seduced into purchasing mementos from his massive stock of western photographic views. The five photographs by Norman Reed relate to Santa Barbara, California. Two of these photographs show a pensive friar in the classic setting of the Mission Garden. This location, dating back to 1786, is now a National Historic Landmark commemorating the history of Spanish colonization in California. The last of the Reed group shows a neatly-dressed girl under a grape arbor. The uncredited images include several that are almost certainly by William Henry Jackson. These include landscapes of the Grand Canyon, Colorado Springs, views in New Mexico, the Rio Grande, the Canyon Diablo, Stockton, California, and more. The old Cliff House, a San Francisco destination opened in 1863, was destroyed by fire 25 December 1894. The Cliff House was rebuilt by Adolph Sutro (1830-1898), entrepreneur, philanthropist, and enormously popular Mayor of San Francisco (1894-1896), who also built the Sutro Baths on a small beach inlet below it. The Sutro Baths, opened to the public on 14 March 1986, was the world's largest indoor swimming pool establishment. The baths struggled for years, mostly due to high operating and maintenance costs. A fire in 1966 destroyed the building while it was being demolished. Both the Cliff House and the former baths site are now a part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area, operated by the United States National Park Service. A complete set of the "Monarch" souvenir of the California Midwinter Fair. The photographs depict both the fair itself, and scenes throughout the state. The fair, held in San Francisco's Golden Gate Park, was extremely successful: it made money while promoting winter travel to the Golden State. "The plan of the work is to present a series of photographic views of the Midwinter Fair, interspersed with select views of the natural wonders of the State . The descriptions of California Scenes . which treat of places outside of San Francisco, were written by J. M. Hutchings, the 'Father of the Yosemite'" (wrapper copy). All but one part (# 14) has at least one photograph of the Sierra Nevada, mostly scenes in Yosemite Valley. There are several photographs of Lake Tahoe and one photograph of the High Sierra taken by Theodore H. Solomons. Each part has a double-page panoramic photograph at the center. Several of these are stunning images, but the most spectacular photographs are Taber's photographs of the Midwinter Fair after dark illuminated by electric light. And, in case you wondered why "Monarch" is part of the title, "Monarch" is the Examiner's mascot, a stuffed Grizzly Bear exhibited as part of the 'Forty-nine Mining Camp, one of the more popular venues at the fair. "The California Midwinter International Exposition of 1894 was the state's first international event and as such, was a landmark in her history. Purposely held in winter, it showcased the glorious climate of the Golden State and followed on the heels of the vastly successful World's Columbian Exhibition held in Chicago in 1893 . The fair did much to attract visitors to California . To document this major event, fair organizers chose Isaiah Taber as official photographer . Documenting the entire evolution of the fair, Taber took pictures from beginning to end, from the grading of the site to the finished environment. Taber's splendid views show the event in all its glory, from its architectural playfulness to its exotic attractions and are noteworthy for their clarity and composition. Realizing that the fair was ephemeral, Taber made his photographs the permanent record of the event . The Midwinter Fair was extremely successful and had a lasting impact not only in San Francisco but also in the state's southern realm . San Francisco was host to another international event two decades after the Midwinter Fair: in 1914, one of the most important events in California history took place there -- the Panama-Pacific International Exposition. 25x32 cm (9 3/4 x 12 1/2 inches); on a thin paper mount, matted, 36.4x43 cm (14 1/2 x 17 inches). The Geysers is the world's largest geothermal field. It spans an area of around thirty square miles in Sonoma, Lake and Mendocino counties, approximately 72 miles north of San Francisco, centered in the area of Geyser Canyon and Cobb Mountain. Unlike most geothermal resources, The Geysers is a dry steam field which mainly produces superheated steam. The Geysers were first seen by European Americans and named in 1847 during John Frémont's survey of the Sierra Mountains and the Great Basin by William Bell Elliot who called the area "The Geysers," although the geothermal features were not technically geysers, but fumaroles. Between 1848 and 1854, Archibald C. Godwin developed The Geysers into a spa named The Geysers Resort Hotel, which attracted tourists including Ulysses S. Grant, Theodore Roosevelt and Mark Twain. The resort declined in popularity in the mid 1880s, and rebranded itself to appeal to lower-income people. The first geothermal wells drilled in Geyser Canyon were the first in the Western Hemisphere. The first power plant at the Geysers was privately developed by the owner of The Geysers Resort and opened in 1921, producing 250 kilowatts of power to light the resort. Today, The Geysers draws steam from more than 350 wells and produced 20% of California's renewable energy in 2019. A stunning scene that only a large size print like this one does justice. Two short closed tears with a 1 1/2" crease between them to the top edge. I. W. Taber (1830-1912) opened his gallery on San Francisco's Montgomery Street in 1871. His business was well known for portraiture and and a plethora of California and Western views- quite a few of which were the unacknowledged works of other photographers. Taber enjoyed success outside of California as well. He was sent to London in 1897 to photograph the pageant of the Queen Victoria Jubilee. Tragically, Taber's career came to a halt when he lost his gallery and negative collection in 1906 due to the San Francisco earthquake and fire. (Information from Online Archive of California).…

Zustand: Near fine. Boudoir card, 8 1/2 x 5 1/4 inches. Albumen photographic print mounted on card, captioned, "B 3. Chinese Restaurant, S. F., Cal. Taber Photo., San Francisco," in the negative. Minor wear at edges of mount. Near fine. A striking view of Woey Sin Low (會仙樓), one of the most celebrated and long-running and most celebrated restaurants in nineteenth-century San Francisco's Chinatown. Located at 808 Dupont Street (now Grant Avenue), Woey Sin Low was in operation by at least 1871 and remained at the same address until the destruction of Chinatown in the earthquake and fire of 1906. Its unusually elaborate façade and balconies made the restaurant a recurring subject for photographers of the neighborhood, including Taber, who later photographed both the building and views from its upper balcony. The photograph itself appears to have a somewhat complicated production history. An example in the Bancroft Library has been attributed to San Francisco photographer Oscar V. Lange, and the image is reported also to have been published by the short-lived photographic firm of MacDonald & Dowe before being issued by Isaiah West Taber. The present example is Taber's boudoir-card issue, with his credit and the number and title "B 3. Chinese Restaurant, S. F., Cal." in the negative. Taber was offering the image by about 1889, when No. 3, "Chinese Restaurant, Chinatown," appeared among the 5 x 8-inch "Boudoir Photos" listed in hisCatalogue, Alaska to Mexico. The photograph probably predates substantial alterations to the restaurant's upper façade visible in later photographs, although the date of the original negative remains uncertain. Minimal rubbing to extremities, small bookseller's description neatly affixed to front paste-down. A touch of very light foxing, otherwise a near fine copy, the notoriously fragile endpapers remarkably fresh and intact. One of Kipling's most enduring and widely read novels, Captains Courageous stands apart within his canon as a pure sea story, drawn from his own experiences aboard fishing vessels off the Grand Banks of Newfoundland. First published in 1897, it tells the story of Harvey Cheyne, a spoiled American boy transformed by hardship, discipline, and camaraderie after being swept overboard and rescued by a Gloucester fishing schooner. The novel's vivid depiction of life at sea - its dangers, routines, and moral code - owes much to Kipling's gift for observation and his admiration for working seamen. The result is a narrative at once adventurous and deeply humane, often compared to the great maritime traditions of Dana and Melville, but with a distinctly Kiplingesque emphasis on character and duty. Isaiah West Taber (1830-1912) is a slightly deceptive figure in this context - he was not primarily a book illustrator, but one of the leading American photographers of the late 19th century, based in San Francisco. That explains why the plates in Captains Courageous feel unusually "real": they are derived from photographic studies, not traditional drawn illustration. The publisher's pictorial gilt cloth binding, with its bold maritime design, is particularly attractive and increasingly difficult to find in such well-preserved condition, especially with the delicate coated endpapers intact and the gilt still bright. Two photographs of elegant Chinese restaurants in pre-earthquake San Francisco Chinatown, likely taken in the mid-1880s. The first photograph depicts the Woey Sin Low restaurant's third-floor balcony, looking past hanging glass lanterns and an ornately carved wooden window onto the corner of Dupont and Clay Streets. In front of the restaurant, a hanging banner reads "B obàn ji xí," advertising that the establishment can host and arrange banquets. The second photograph has been identified as the grand dining room at another restaurant just around the corner on Washington Street, called Bun Sun Low. After a fire in 1885, Bun Sun Low's dining room was renovated into the dramatic space pictured here, with hanging chandeliers and lanterns, and intricate carvings adorning the doors, windows, walls, and even ceiling. Despite the caption, some uncertainty exists as to the identification of this second photograph a different image of what is clearly the same room is held at the New York Public Library, which states that the restaurant in the image was located on Dupont Street rather than Washington, suggesting it may in fact be a lower floor dining room of the Woey Sin Low restaurant depicted in the previous photo. Both restaurants were long-running fixtures of Chinatown, in operation from the 1870s and present in Langley's directories from the 1880s. As neither establishment survived the earthquake and subsequent fires of 1906, it may not be possible to definitively identify the restaurant shown in the interior view. Both images were published by the prolific photography company of Isaiah West Taber, which is the source of many wonderful, if often dubiously attributed, pre-earthquake images of San Francisco. The catastrophe that leveled these beautiful restaurants was equally disastrous for Taber his entire considerable stock of photo negatives was destroyed in the same event. An interior and exterior glimpse at some of the finest Chinese dining San Francisco had to offer in the Gilded Age, as well as evidence of the interest in the activities and aesthetics of Chinatown held by many Americans. Historically significant collection of rare early photos of San Francisco and its environs, originating from an affluent local family. As follows from the gilt-lettered name on the front board, the album was compiled by, for of in the memory of one Samuel Parsons. According to the U.S. Federal Censuses of 1870 and 1880, Samuel Parsons was born in ca. 1868 in San Francisco in the family of a Boston native, Charles Allen Parsons (1831-1893) and a Maine native, Elizabeth L. Parsons (1836-1892, née Green). In 1880, Samuel Parsons, then twelve years old, lived with his family at 14 Hill Street. "Langley's San Francisco Directory for the year commencing April 1886" lists Samuel Parsons (then about eighteen years old) as a clerk at the shop of a San Francisco wallpaper and window shade seller, "G.W. Clark & Co.;" Parson's residence is still indicated as "14 Hill Street" (Langley's San Francisco Directory for the year commencing April 1886. P. 936; see more) . The album opens with six partly hand-coloured cabinet portrait photos, evidently of Samuel Parsons, showing him from the baby age to his early twenties. All portraits are mounted on the official card of a pioneer San Francisco photographer, Isaiah Taber, known for producing portraits of noted Californians, a series of stereoscopic views of the West Coast and a collection of views and scenes of Hawaii (including portraits of King Kalakaua). Then follow two early photos of San Francisco private residences; the one on the right is Parson's house at 14 Hill Street (see number "14" above the front door). The other residence with the number "405" above the front door was not identified. Another excellent early photo on the official card of "Tobey & McCullough" depicts a San Francisco street (possibly Hill Street looking from the crossing with Valencia Street). The photo features wooden pavements and a dirt central part, street lamps and a leaving passenger cart, as well as the crossing with a cobblestone street. The album also contains a large, well-preserved view of the storefront of "Geo. W. Clark & Co.," featuring the company's elaborate advertising posters ("Paper hangings and window shades") and the house number - "645" (the shop was located at 645 Market Street). The shop's staff is posing at the front, with Samuel Parsons most likely standing first from right. The photo is mounted on the official card with printed credentials of the photographers ("Baker & Cathcart") and their address ("Room 21, St. Ann's building, Cor. Powell & Eddy Sts., S.F.") on the lower margin. Another early interesting photo depicts a scene of a public gathering in a rural locality (most likely in California), possibly during the foundation of a building. The other photos include portraits of the Parsons family and friends during leisure trips in the countryside. Five photos depict a party in a redwood forest and at a river, where they arrived by a small steam train. The other images portray Samuel, his father and two young women posing at a countryside cottage and a group hiking near a mountain stream. A large photo at the rear, with the credentials of the "Seely Studio" from Eureka, shows a young girl, possibly a relative. Overall, an interesting collection of rare early photos of San Francisco and its residents. Not much is known about the fate of Samuel Parsons. His father, Charles Allen Parsons, died under uncertain circumstances during a sea voyage to Tahiti in 1893. The newspaper articles dedicated to the incident mentioned as his remaining children only Samuel's younger brother, James A. Parsons (1869 - after 1927) and half-sister Grace B. The photographs are beautifully presented in a contemporary red morocco binding, likely collected by a French traveller. Leather slightly mottled with a few faint marks, neatly recolored in places, mounts slightly foxed and cockled, a few photographs with marginal silver mirroring or faint surface abrasions. Else a near fine copy. An excellent photographic record of San Francisco and Yosemite by the multitalented photographer Isiah West Taber. The album also contains evocative images of New York, Washington DC, and Niagara Falls, with some by the Boston-based photographer Charles Pollock. The adventurous Taber (1830-1912) arrived in San Francisco at the beginning of the gold rush in 1849. Quickly deciding there was more money in trade than digging for gold, Taber eventually established his photography studio in San Francisco, during which time he acquired the entire archive of the landscape photographer Carleton Watkins. In 1888, he was appointed a Yosemite commissioner in appreciation of his work to spread its beauty. Sadly, Taber's studio was destroyed in the 1906 San Francisco earthquake and fired with an estimated loss of about 20 tons of view negatives and 80 tons of portrait negatives; he never reopened his gallery. The photograph album shows images of San Francisco, including Market Street, Cliff House, and an attractive birdseye view. In Yosemite, the photographs by Taber show El Capitan, Table Rock, and Mariposa Grove.
