The four volumes are seldom found as a set: volumes I-III - offered here - being a fait accompli; with volume IV added in part as a genuine addition to the canon from authentic sources and in part as a cash-in based on material of dubious authority. The first volume contains an important account of the author by Dr. James Drake ("probably Brown's best friend", Boyce), who - along with his publisher Sam Briscoe - was one of the few who did not desert the poet at his premature end. A very good copy, largely free of foxing, with an early water(?)-stain to preliminaries of the first volume, and some minor worming to part of upper inner margin of volume III - once or twice affecting running title (only). Early ink ownership name of Jonathan Conduit to titles, and of Charles Bransby to volume I pastedown. Later armorial bookplate of Francis White Popham to pastedown of each volume. Rara edizione originale del 1684, variante A, di questa interessante opera di storia naturale del botanico originario di Palermo Paolo Silvio Boccone (1663-1704). Boccone compì i suoi studi a Padova, Perugia e Pisa. Viaggiò moltissimo per poi stabilirsi a Padova dove divenne professore di botanica. Fu botanico di corte del Granduca di Toscana Ferdinando II contribuendo allo sviluppo del Giardino dei Semplici di Firenze. Coniò diverse specie ed ebbe grandi meriti nella diffusione della patata come pianta alimentare. Questa sua celebre opera raccoglie i risultati di numerose indagini e ricerche sui più variegati fenomeni naturali, geologici, medici e terapeutici. All'interno sono presenti due tavole fuori testo. Scarce original edition of 1684 of this interesting work of natural history by the botanist from Palermo Paolo Silvio Boccone (1663-1704). Boccone studied in Padova, Perugia and Pisa. He travelled a lot and then established in Padova where he became teacher of botany. He was botanist in the Court of Granduca di Toscana Ferdinando II contributing to the development of Giardino dei Semplici in Florence. He gave the name to different speciees and had the merit to spread the usage of potato as a food plant. This famous work collects the results of different studies and researches about different natural phenomena, geology, medical and therapeuticals . In very good conditions.
