Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. 1st Edition. A one-volume set of the Poetical works of Crabbe, published in his lifetime by Galignani, who specialised in collected works of major English poets. This copy lacks the engraved portrait frontispiece of Crabbe, but otherwise is a nice large paper copy in the original publisher's plain boards with paper label, some minor stains and marks to covers, clean and fresh internally. Pages are iii, 319, 17.5 x 27 cm, quarto. Crabbe has written most of his poetry by 1829 - Posthumous Tales was published in 1834. John Murray published his works in 5 volumes in 1823, and in 8 volumes in 1834. The Rev. George Crabbe, The Suffolk poet, is best known for his early use of the realistic narrative form and his descriptions of middle and working-class life and people. Lord Byron described him as "nature's sternest painter, yet the best." (Wikipedia).…

xvi, 496 pages. Hardcover: H 17.25cm x L 11.75cm. Original handsome red leather binding with stamped decoration to boards, additional bright gilt stamping to front board, spine decorated with total of six compartments with gilt tooling to five and gilt lettering to title compartment second from top; some soiling and light scuffing to boards; gilt tooling at boards' inner edges as well. All edges gilt. Sewn-in thin green ribbon page marker. Dark brown front pastedown and dark brown rear endpapers. Unfortunately front free endpaper removed. Past owner's pencil inscription dated for January 1st, 1875 on front free endpaper recto. Foxing strongest on several initial and rear leaves but with varied occurrences to interior text pages. Preceding text title leaf is b/w frontispiece and b/w engraved title leaf have interlaying tissue guard sheet; text's six b/w plates (making eight total) also on unpaged leaves opposite pages 48, 106, 210, 300, 380, and 448 also with guard sheets save for one. The book's printing, i.e. the type, particularly at page numbers shows that the printer's plates were worn which is indicative that this is a reprint of an earlier edition. Binding is firm. Still a handsome book and an uncommon Scottish imprint of the work of British poet George Crabbe. …
