In den WarenkorbHard Cover. Dust Jacket. First Edition. (London: Published for THE CRIME CLUB by COLLINS 1935). First UK Edition in dustwrapper priced 7s 6d net to the spine. SIGNED AND INSCRIBED BY THE AUTHOR TO HIS WIFE - THE FIRST COPY. Publisher's orange boards with black lettering to the spine. About VG (spine tips rolled, spine partially faded chiefly to the bottom 1/4 or so, foxing to the page block edges, and to the early and late pages of the book) in a dustwrapper that shows as a near fine copy but which has had quite extensive restoration by a skilled paper conservator. A photograph is provided which shows the state of the dustwrapper pre-restoration. Inscribed by the Author to the front free end-paper: "The first copy/ to my wife/ with my love/ Herbert Adams/ 24/7/35". Dorothy Sayers reviewed the book for The Times Literary Review - 4th August 1935 - she says: "The most striking thing about Fate Laughs is the extreme slow wittedness of the hero; but the poor young man was doubtless affected by the remarkable series of incidents and coincidences in which he was involved. It might happen to anybody, I suppose, to encounter his own double in a railway carriage and, being on his uppers, to agree (for a consideration) to impersonate the double for an hour or so. But the successive shocks of losing his heart to a lady and immediately falling heir to a large fortune must have had a stunning effect on our hero's brain; otherwise, when he learned that the husband of his double's former fiancee had been murdered during the hour of the impersonation, he ought surely to have realised, before page 220, that there might be a connection between the one thing and the other. However, Mr. Adams has filled the interval with many surprising adventures, and the end is not as we think, because something we could not have known crops up on page 246 to disconcert us. This is not fair; but it all makes lively reading enough". Rare. Further photographs available upon request. Signed by Author.…
