Le case a volta della Penisola sorrentino-amalfitana definite architetture minori, rustiche o popolari, non sono mai state oggetto, prima d'ora, di studi sistematici, pur rappresentando un fondamentale attributo espressivo del paesaggio, assumendo, in molti singoli episodi, notevole valore storico-artistico e dando vita ad un tessuto civile, medievale e moderno, davvero unico. Di conseguenza, allo scopo di contrastare la loro cancellazione, nel 1992, è stata intrapresa la presente ricerca, relativa al territorio di Amalfi e fondata sul censimento del costruito storico delle frazioni Lone, Pastena, Pogerola, Tovere e Vettica Minore, ovvero dei settori comunali meno esposti ai processi di alterazione prodotti dall'economia turistico-balneare.La sistematica ricognizione dell'area costiera tra Amalfi e Conca dei Marini, oltre a dimostrare il fatto che il locale patrimonio residenziale storico è contrassegnato da caratteri tipologici, formali e costruttivi omogenei, risultato di un'unica grande civiltà, ha dato luogo, per la prima volta, all'individuazione di innumerevoli e cospicui episodi medievali, riferibili all'epoca del maggior sviluppo ed evoluzione dell'agricoltura, mercé l'investimento dei profitti accumulati con le attività marinare e mercantili. L'analisi dei suddetti organismi, sintesi di consuetudini urbane e rurali, ed il confronto degli stessi con quelli di età moderna - nei quali i bisogni della vita e dell'economia contadina sono progressivamente prevalsi su tutti gli altri - hanno restituito la dimora costiera del XII secolo circa, arricchita dagli adattamenti, consolidamenti ed ampliamenti successivi.
