Erstausgabe
12. Trajecti ad Rhenum ( Utrecht ) , apud Jacobum à Poolsum, 1727, in-4°, 24,5 x 19,5 cm, engraved portrait frontispiece + title (printed in red and black and with engraved vignet) + (44) nn pp + 541 pp + (1)(errata) + large engraved portrait (folding) + large folding plate of his funerary monument. Bound in contemporary vellum. Endpapers a bit dustsoiled, pp 30-60 a bit browned, still a fine/good copy. First edition of this biography of Pope Adrian VIth ( Adriaan Floriszoon Boeyens - Utrecht 1459 - Rome 1523). He was the only pope of pre-modern times to be elected outside the Italian circles, born in the Netherlands ( Low Countries) , he was the teacher of Charles Vth ( Charles Quint), emperor of the Holy Empire, studied and became professor at Louvain university and had Erasmus among his students. In 1520, in the absence of Charles Vth , he was appointed Regent of Spain. His short tenure as pope ( 12 months) and the enormous political problems with which he was confronted prevented him of stopping the spread of Luther's ideas.
