Pope Pius II was born Enea Silvio Bartolomeo Piccolomini (18 October 1405 - 14 August 1464), was head of the Catholic Church and ruler of the Papal States from 19 August 1458 to his death. Aeneas Silvius was an author, diplomat, and orator, and private secretary of Antipope Felix V and then the Emperor Frederick III, and then Pope Eugenius IV. He participated in the Council of Basel, but left it in 1443 to follow Frederick, whom he reconciled to the Roman obedience. He became Bishop of Trieste in 1447, Bishop of Siena in 1450, and a cardinal in 1456. He was a Renaissance humanist with an international reputation. Aeneas Silvius' longest and most enduring work is the story of his life, the Commentaries, which was the first autobiography of a pope to have been published. The leaves are marked with neither signatures, nor catchwords, nor numerals. Throughout the pages of the book, there is contemporary handwritten marginalization. The author is Pope Pius II, born Enea Silvio Bartolomeo Piccolomini, head of the Catholic Church and ruler of the Papal States from August 19, 1458, until his death. Writing under the name Aeneas Silvius, he was a diplomat and orator, as well as private secretary to Antipope Felix V, then Emperor Frederick III, and subsequently Pope Eugenius IV. As Pope, he was the ideal of the age of humanism. A true Renaissance polymath, a patron of archaeology and the arts, and alongside all this, a committed devotee of human life. The book contains the correspondence of Aeneas Sylvius in a total of 432 epistles. It has no separate title page, but rather begins immediately with the table of contents under the inscription: »Numerus et ordo epistolarum in hoc opere contentarum«. Pope Pius II (1458-1464) travelled widely and was a prolific writer; two incomplete editions of his work were published by Henrich Petri in 1551 and this edition in 1571 which includes accounts of his many travels and in particular his secret mission to Scotland with Cardinal Albergati "The voyage was very tempestuous and Piccolomini vowed to walk, if spared, barefoot from the port of arrival to the nearest shrine of Our Lady. He landed at Dunbar and, from the pilgrimage of ten miles through ice and snow to the sanctuary of Whitekirk, he contracted the gout from which he suffered for the rest of his life" (Catholic Encyclopedia).Two of his most important works were either entirely or partly written during his period as Pope: "his geographical and ethnographical description of Asia and Europe; and his "Memoirs", which are the only autobiography left us by a pope.
