Hardcover. Zustand: New. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: New. 3rd Edition. This title is offered in AS NEW condition, SEALED under publisher's wraps (slit open for signature), and SIGNED by the Artist. This is the Third edition (2003), LIMITED to 2,000 copies. The title is a hardcover book with an AS NEW pictorial DUST JACKET over illustrated and printed boards. Features text by Jane Harris. The text is in English. Includes a CD-ROM of five video works (plus outtakes and an interview by Gus Van Sant) set on the inside front cover in an ornately printed sleeve. There are 160 pages with 153 four-color plates on high-quality heavy paper. Measures 9 x 13 inches (23 x 33 cm). Anthony Goicolea's brightly lit color images explore notions of reality, science, age, and sexuality. Here he uses adolescent boys to at first incite curiosity as to his direction, and then subverts expectations with statements on subjects like cloning, groupthink, masochism, and virility. He says, These works are simultaneously rooted in nostalgia and science fiction. While hinting at the past and early Freudian developmental stages of youth, they also refer to new medical and technological breakthroughs in fertility drugs and gene cloning with biting cynicism and humor. His photographs are astoundingly detailed, with not even the most minor background feature left unsignified, each contributing to his strange vignettes and mini-narratives. In Jane Harris' text, she observes, They are William Blake spirit-visions absurdly derailed, the shenanigans of imbecile angels on the lam, ecstasy-induced plots in an Arcadian farce. Ultimately, of course, they are the digital antics of an artist who sees in the genre of the landscape yet another malleable tableau. And, as with his photographs of himself in replica, each boy clone playing a part in some larger psycho-sexual drama, every element--flora or fauna--is given a role. This book also includes a compendium CD-ROM of video works by Goicolea, about which the Artist has said: Recently, I have begun working on a series of video projects in which the narrative structure is generated and depicted through the progression of time. As in my photos, I am interested in self-portraiture, vanity, and narcissism, as well as issues revolving around the body, bodily functions, beauty, chaos, the grotesque, and the perverse. The videos introduce the element of time into my narratives. I am interested in using this element to chronicle the gestation period of progressive states which ultimately end in destructive or absurd predicaments. FROM THE PUBLISHER: Across the specific differences among Goicolea s works, the artist tirelessly excavates human weakness, awkwardness, and discomfort. Toward the end, he returns again and again to his themes of adolescent sexuality, unflinching self-exploration, and the never-ending contest between victims and victimizers. We are torn between the desire to witness these strivers and underdogs evolve gloriously into calm, powerful grown-ups and wanting to observe the Peter Pans as they play out the piercing struggles of adolescence - such apt metaphors for the rest of life s battles - into eternity -Jennifer Dalton. Hardcover. Zustand: New. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: New. 1st Edition. First edition, first printing. Signed in black ink on the colophon page by Goicolea. Hardcover. Photographically illustrated laminated paper-covered boards, with dust jacket. Photographs by Anthony Goicolea. Brief text by Jane Harris. Includes a CD-ROM containing five short video works and "outtakes" by Goicolea, and an interview by Gus Van Sant. The CD-ROM is laid in a printed sleeve affixed to the inside front cover. Designed by Jack Woody and Anthony Goicolea. Unpaginated, with 153 four-color plates, beautifully printed on heavy fine paper. 9 x 13 inches. This first edition of Anthony Goicolea was limited to 2500 hardbound copies. A scarce signed copy. New in New dust jacket (opened only for signature). A flawless copy. From Harris' text: "Anthony Goicolea's recent landscape photographs read like the travelogue of a puerile mystic: a vision of the natural world where twisted Dr. Doolittle fantasies of frolicking animals take center stage, and pastoral dreams worthy of Virgil and Giorgione are mischievously rearranged. More than idyllic beauty or divine awe, these sublime vistas and picturesque scenes evoke a sense of preternatural kitsch. They are William Blake spirit-visions absurdly derailed, the shenanigans of imbecile angels on the lam, ecstasy-induced plots in an Arcadian farce. Ultimately, of course, they are the digital antics of an artist who sees in the genre of landscape yet another malleable tableau. And, as with his photographs of himself in replica, each boy clone playing a part in some larger psycho-sexual drama, every element--flora or fauna--is given a role."
