Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good+. Full morocco, lavishly stamped in gilt on upper board and spine, ornate pattern repeated in blind on rear board; oblong, approx. 7.75 x 5 inches; approx. pp. 150, autographed friendship album, handwritten throughout by numerous hands. Boards lightly scuffed; front hinge cracked; FFEP neatly removed. A rich collection of quotes and signatures, offering numerous inks and callgraphic specimens, centered around Cornell College, Mount Vernon, Iowa, but including Bellevue, Cedar Falls, Marion -- and more -- with contributors hailing from a few distant towns, like Chicago and New Orleans. Entries are contributed from 1873-79, with the majority from 1875, a few addressed to "Mollie," but most addressed to "Mary," (Mary B. Woods) who seems to have cut a popular figure, as nearly every recto bears a contribution, and quite a few versos as well. Remarkably varied penmanship throughout (two in Pitman shorthand), all of it legible (even lovely), contributed by over a hundred men and women, offering pleasant thoughts and good wishes to their friend ("Long may you live / Happy may you be / Marry a good fellow / And live next door to me"), but not afraid to show their dark side ("Life is a waste of wearisome hours / Which seldom the rose of enjoyment adorns / And the heart that is soonest awake to the flowers / Is always the first to be touched by the thorns").

From wikipedia: John Calvin Coolidge Sr. (March 31, 1845 - March 18, 1926) was an American politician and businessman from Vermont, and the father of Calvin Coolidge, the 30th president of the United States. The senior Coolidge administered the presidential oath of office to his son at their family homestead in the early morning hours of August 3, 1923, following the death of President Warren G. Harding. Born in Plymouth, Vermont, John C. Coolidge was a farmer and store owner, and worked at a variety of other occupations, including banker and insurance broker. In addition, he was a veteran of the Vermont militia, and held the law enforcement posts of town constable and county deputy sheriff. A prominent local leader, he served in numerous Plymouth town offices, and was elected to terms in both the Vermont House of Representatives and Vermont Senate. John C. Coolidge remained active in his farming and business interests until his death in Plymouth in 1926; he was buried in Plymouth Notch at a village cemetery where several generations of his family are also buried. From geni dot com: Victoria was a neighbor of John Coolidge in Plymouth. She attended Black River Academy for one year. She married John Coolidge and set up housekeeping in the cramped quarters behind the village store that her husband ran. She was a consumptive and became, soon after her marriage, a chronic invalid. Calvin Coolidge, in his Autobiography, is poetic in describing his mother. He describes her death, "When she knew that her end was near she called us children to her bedside, where we knelt down to receive her final parting blessing. In an hour she was gone. It was her thirty-ninth birthday. I was twelve years old. We laid her away in the blustering snows of March. The greatest grief that can come to a boy came to me. Life was never to seem the same again." Calvin carries his mother's picture with him the rest of his life.

Hardcover. Zustand: Good. Original gilt stamped leather binding; 8vo; contains more than 50 photographic portraits (gem-size oval albumen prints and one tintype, each about 1 inch in diameter), many accompanied by charming period sentiments, contributed by numerous hands. Backstrip chipped and partially detached; several pages loose, with staining from the adhesive used to mount the photographs. A contribution by William Hancock begins, "These photographs will ere long lose their brightness; the Autographs will fade; and become illegible; and the Book which contains them will feel the changes of time, grow old, and vanish away." Not so -- the photographs are in excellent condition overall (just a few scuffed or torn from attempted removal); the autographs are perfectly legible; and though the book certainly shows signs of use and time, it remains a nice record of a time and place -- mostly, Mechanicville Academy. With the photographs and autographs of students from Brainard, Albany, Rochester, Waterford, Williamsville, Amsterdam, New Haven, Saratoga, Stillwater, Brooklyn, Castleton, and more, it offers a peek into New York, Vermont, and Connecticut. Circulated by a woman named Cornelia (a few contributions are addressed to her, but do not reveal a last name), it includes entries by and images of: Mary Porter, Belville Roberts, Elizabeth Roberts, Mary Leland, John Leland, Amelia Adams, John Lawrence, Cornelia Lawrence, Libbie Sears, Emily Smith, Hiram Richardson, Benjamin Baker, and many more.

Folio. Album of 52 ff. (the last two removed) with cards tipped in. Contemporary half calf with giltstamped cover title. An album compiled by the young law student Erich Frey (1882-1964), who would later become known as one of the most colourful characters of the Weimar Republic: a devotee of Berlin's nightlife, a dandy with a taste for the margins of society, and an experienced criminal defence lawyer famous for his fur-rimmed checkered coat and a monocle that he was fond of removing or inserting at court to great dramatic effect when defending such illustrious clients as the Marxist Spartakists, burglars like Karl Friedrich Bernotat (whose penchant for early printing and first editions was legendary), the mobsters of the "Immertreu" convicts' association, serial killers like Friedrich Schumann and Carl Großmann, Germany's first nude dancer Lola Bach, or Paul Krantz, one of the young protagonists of the so-called "Steglitz tragedy". - Frey's success allowed him to own a villa in Teltow-Seehof and luxurious chambers in Bellevuestraße 21/22, above Café Josty. In October 1933, at the age of 54, he had to desert all this: warned by a colleague that the National Socialists had issued a warrant for him, Frey drove straight to Berlin's Anhalt railway station without even visiting his home and so escaped to Zurich and on to Paris. In 1939 he flew to Santiago de Chile, where he died in 1964, aged 82. - The writers of the letters and portrait postcards (most of which contain the signature only) sent to the young student in Munich and Berlin are Richard Alexander, Rudolf Ander, Marie Barkany, August Bebel, Rudolf Berger, Rosa Bertens, Ferdinand Bonn, Bernhard von Bülow, Wilhelm Burmester, Nuscha Butze, Rudolf Christians, Felix Dahn, Emmy Destinn (2), Marie Dietrich, Konrad Dreher, Louise Dumont, Georg Engels, Geraldine Farrar, Ludwig Fulda, Ludwig Ganghofer, Willi Geiger, Teresina Gessner, Jenny Gross, Wilhelm Grüning, Max Halbe (2 Karten und 1 Visitenkarte, 2 Kuverts), Ernst Haeckel, Maximilian Harden (3), Thomas Theodor Heine, Emilie Herzog, Joseph Joachim, Gustav Kadelburg, Friederike Kierschner, Adolf Klein, Ludwig Knaus, Paul Knüpfer, Max Kretzer, Isidor Landau, Else Lehmann, Franz von Lenbach, Rita Léon, Julius Lieban, Max Liebermann, Paul Lindau, Franz von Liszt, Paul Meyerheim, Theodor Mommsen, Karl Muck, Arthur Nikisch, Robert Philipp, Max Pohl, Max Pollandt (cabinet photograph and letter), Franceschina Prevosti, Emanuel Reicher, Marie Reisenhofer, Eugen Richter, Rudolf Rittner, Thaddäus Robl, Therese Rothauser, Marcell Salzer, Richard Schmidt-Cabanis, Gisela Schneider, Paul Singer, Kurt Sommer (2), Otto Sommerstorff, Adolf Rt. von Sonnenthal, Agnes Sorma, Friedrich Spielhagen, Curt Stern, Julius Stettenheim, Richard Strauss, Ludwig Thoma, Emil Thomas, Heinz Tovote, Albert Träger, Irene Triesch, Karl Uhlig, Rudolf Virchow, Siegfried Wagner (2), Harry Walden und Leonie Taliansky, Mia Werber, Charlotte Wiehe, Ernst von Wildenbruch, Marianne Wulf, Hermann Zumpe, as well as an unidentified singer in her Wagnerian costume. - Binding loosened; lightly stained, sunned and browned; edges and spine-ends bumped. Includes several memorial postcards for the Kingdom of Prussia's second centenary, Goethe's 150th birthday, the 19th century's last Christmas Eve, etc.

  • The autographs include Edmund Barton, Alfred Deakin, John Christian Watson (the first three Prime Ministers of Australia, with Watson holding office from April to August 1904 as Australia's first Labor Prime Minister). The album lists 104 signatures of both M.P.s as well as Senators, among which we list Joseph Cook (when Deakin resigned in 1913 Cook became leader of the Liberal Party and subsequently Prime Minister), William John Lyne (Premier of New South Wales), Frederick Holder (First Speaker of the House of Representatives), Austin Chapman (Chapman performed the strategically important duties of Government Whip), William Morris Hughes (who became Prime Minister in 1915), Andrew Fisher, Sir John Quick (co-author of the authoritative "Annotated Constitution of the Australian Commonwealth" published in 1901), Isaac Alfred Isaacs (Attorney-General, Chief Justice of the High Court, and first Australian born Governor-General), Henry Bournes Higgins, etc. etc. Sm. 4to. In orig. oblong calf portfolio and preserved in full mottled calf solander case with gilt title to upper cover and spine. A most desirable and iconic memento of Australia's Federation History, and Australia's first Parliamentary Representatives.

4to (196 x 244 mm). 40 ff. (some blank) containing ca. 90 entries by writers, musicians, and actors, as well as by family members, teachers, and classmates. Original navy leather with gilt cover borders. All edges gilt. A fine document of a young autograph collector's passion for the world of the stage, and of the Viennese "World of Yesterday" described by Stefan Zweig, remarkable for its surprising number of eminent contributors. - Alice Wagner, born in Zadar, Croatia (then under Austrian rule) eight days before the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand in Sarajevo, was the daughter of the mechanical engineer Rudolf Wagner and his wife Anna; she spent her childhood in Vienna's middle-class 9th district. The earliest contributors to her album - apparently a gift for her 11th birthday - are her teachers, school friends, and relatives, and after gathering a dozen of such entries between 1925 and 1929, her interest in her collection appears to have waned. Yet after a hiatus of a year, now aged nearly seventeen, Alice finds a new use for the navy-blue volume: clearly a devotee of the theatre and opera, she turns to pursuing the signatures of the great performers and writers of the stage. In 1931 she obtains the signatures of singers Käthe Dorsch and Hans-Heinz Bollmann, as well as of playwrights Anton Wildgans and of Christa Winsloe, who recommends to her young admirer the movie version of her play, "Mädchen in Uniform" (ignoring the age restriction passed on the then-notorious film). - In the year 1932 alone Alice gathers no fewer than 37 dated contributions, which include internationally prominent writers such as Thomas Mann, Ernst Toller, Erich Kästner, and Jakob Wassermann, but also Viennese celebrities such as Stefan Zweig, Felix Braun, Felix Salten, Richard Beer-Hofmann, Max Mell, Franz Theodor Csokor, Ernst Lothar, Franz Lehár, Robert Stolz, Hans Moser, Otto Tressler, and even the physician Julius Wagner-Jauregg. The most peculiar entry is that by the satirist Alexander Roda Roda, who - long a happily married man, first by common-law and then legally - signs himself as the 18-year-old Alice's "fiancé" on August 4th, at 7:27 p.m. precisely. Underneath this tongue-in-cheek inscription the cabaret artist Fritz Grünbaum adds his own name on 28 April 1933, whimsically appointing himself "best man"; and underneath his entry, the actor Paul Morgan adds his own name on 10 October 1933. Further contributors of the years 1933/34 include Max Brod, Arnold Zweig, Attila Hörbiger, Tilla Durieux, Oskar Maria Graf, and Paula Wessely; undated entries include Ernst Deutsch and Max Pallenberg, Bruno Walter, Karl Schönherr, and Ferdinand Bruckner. - Contributions dry up after 1934, possibly reflecting as much the now 21-year-old Alice's changing interests as the increasing political constraints on Viennese culture, first under Austro-fascism and then following the National Socialist "Anschluss". On 9 March 1939 the Wagners, who were Jewish, were evicted from their home in the well-to-do Ayrenhoffgasse and were forced to move into a "Jew house" in the third district, where Jewish tenants were concentrated before deportation. At their address at Untere Weißgerberstrasse 5, apartment 7, the Austrian Holocaust victims' database records six known victims aged between 7 and 71 years, all deported to Minsk in November 1941 and to Auschwitz in November 1942. Alice Wagner escaped the fate of her housemates (which was also that of several of the contributors to her album, such as her "best men" Fritz Grünbaum and Paul Morgan): in July 1941 she married a 40-year-old Romanian, left Vienna, and in March 1942 gave birth to a daughter. It is not known how the family survived the remaining war years, but they returned to Vienna in early 1947 and moved into a house in Berggasse, not far from Sigmund Freud's old office. Her parents, too, survived the Holocaust. Her album gives poignant evidence of the last flaring up of the old Viennese and German cultural scene before its collapse. - A detailed list of contributors is available upon request.

8vo (120 x 180 mm). 62 entries on 88 ff. Contemporary green cloth with brocade covers. Several addenda. The present album was owned by Marie-Louise Schenker-Angerer ("Mausi", 1905-73), daughter of Leopold ("Lony") Kupelwieser and granddaughter of the industrialist Paul Kupelwieser, who had purchased the malaria-infested Brijuni archipelago in 1893. Early in the 20th century, Robert Koch succeeded in eradicating the disease-bearing mosquitos, and the islands off the Istrian coast quickly turned into a resort popular with the European aristocracy and wealthy bourgeoisie, with artists and businessmen. One of the latter was August Schenker-Angerer, a scion of the Schenker shipping dynasty. His son Gottfried was Mausi's brother-in-law, and Gottfried's wife, the soprano Margit ("Manci") (née Rupp), was her sister-in-law. On 10 July 1924 Marie-Louise married Gottfried's younger brother August ("Guggi", 1897-1979). - The album at hand reaches back as far as the 1920s; the earliest contribution, by Alfred Arbter, was entered on the day of Marie-Louise's wedding. Some entries are from Brijuni; many more undated ones were probably written in Vienna, where the family resided in Strohgasse. The latest entries, from the 1940s and beyond, are written in Paris. Among the most famous contributors are Wilhelm Backhaus (2), Alfred Brendel (2), Pablo Casals (autograph musical quotation signed), Jörg Demus (autograph musical quotation signed), George Gershwin (autograph musical quotation signed and 2 photographs), Friedrich Gulda (autograph musical quotation signed), Bronislaw Huberman (autograph entry signed with a photograph pasted in), Wilhelm Kempff (autograph musical quotation signed), Jan Kiepura (signature on a picture postcard), Guglielmo Marconi (2, one a signature on a picture postcard of his yacht "Elettra"), Sergei Rachmaninoff (eh. Shaws Ankunft in Brioni"), and two original photographs, one of which shows him with the heavyweight champion (1926-28) Gene Tunney, who popularised golfing on the islands in 1928/29. Additional entries are by Claude Anet, Mattia Battistini, Jagadish Chandra Bose, Richard Buhlig (2), Winifred Christie, Richard Coudenhove-Kalergi, Otto Erich Deutsch, Severin Eisenberger, Fred Freed (2), Ignaz Friedman, Hedi Gigler-Dongas, Jan Kiepura, Germaine Leroux, Therese Leschetizky, Emanuel Moór, Boyd Neel, Max Reinhardt, Emil Sauer v. Aichried, Wilson Vance (2), Peter Wallfisch, Paul Weingarten, and Earl Wild. - The loosely inserted addenda include letters by Alfred Arbter, Alfred Brendel, Carl Goldmark, Hedwig Kanner-Rosenthal, Luzi Korngold, and Richards Strauss's son Franz, as well as two letters by Vladimir Sokoloff, who gives an enthusiastic report of Max Reinhardt's visit to New York in late 1927. - Little is known about Marie-Louise's later life other than that she published two books under the name "Marie-Louise Kupelwieser de Brioni" (cited below); a poignant account by Pierre Le-Tan suggests that she lost her family fortune and may have died in poverty. - Marie-Louise Kupelwieser de Brioni, Une Grande amitié: F. Schubert et L. Kupelwieser (Paris, L'Étrave, 1968). The same, Der heitere Beethoven: Eine Briefauswahl (München, Piper, 1969). 12 unnumbered ff. (1 blank), 60 numbered ff., 64 blank ff. With 56 armorial drawings in watercolors (1 in India ink) and 40 decorative grisaille cartouches washed in India ink. Late 18th c. calf with gilt spine, gilt-tooled border on boards and star-shaped center panel on both boards. Leading edges gilt. Oblong 12mo. Remarkable collection of autographs from the library of the English botanist and antiquary Dawson Turner (1775-1858) with his autogr. ownership entry on first leaf (dated 1825). Dawson, who had published on botany and was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1802, turned his interests to antiquities in the 1820s. He and his children were taught to draw by their good friend, the renowned Norfolk artist John Sell Cotman, who resided in Yarmouth from 1812 to 1823. - The signatures, mostly clipped from letters and other documents, are from historic French, German and Dutch personages, including William, Prince of Orange (1533-84); Prince Eugene of Savoy (1663-1736); Johann Tserclaes, Count of Tilly, commander of the Imperial forces in the Thirty Years' War (1559-1632); Cornelius Jansen, theologian and later cardinal, founder of Jansenism (1585-1638); Philip de Montmorency, Count of Hoorn (1524-68), and Lamoral Count of Egmont (1522-68, opponents to Spanish rule in the Netherlands, executed); Johann Casimir, Duke of Saxe-Coburg (1564-1633); August the Younger, Duke of Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel, founder of Wolfenbüttel's Herzog August Library (1579-1666); Johann Wilhelm von der Pfalz, Elector Palatine (1658-1716); André-Hercule de Fleury, Cardinal (1653-1743); Fredrick, landgrave of Hesse-Eschwege (1617-1655); Floris van Pallant, Count of Culemborg (1537-98); Froben Ferdinand zu Fürstenberg-Mößkirch (1664-1741), and many more. Most names are accompanied by a skilled armorial illustration in full colour painted on the opposite page; forty of the signatures are bordered by decorative washed cartouches with specially designed figurated, landscape and allegorical ornaments, sometimes rather ingeniously incorporating the signature's pen flourishes and very likely prepared by members of the art-loving and gifted Turner family, possibly with help from Cotman. - Occasional slight brownstaining; book block loosened. Corners bumped; defects to upper spine end and lower third of spine. A remarkable (and remarkably presented) ensemble of autographs, forming a striking early 19th-century showpiece.
