Erstausgabe
Hardcover. First edition. 808pp. Thick quarto [28.5 cm] Red hardcover with gilt stamped titles. Near fine condition. Contents include A Map of the Mormon Colonies of Mexico, and numerous biographies. From the Introduction- "Mormon interest in Mexico existed from the time of the Church's organization in the 1830s. Its archaeological treasures, combined with a rich abundance of native Americans, appealed to the Mormon interest in pre-Columbian civilizations. Toward the end of the nineteenth century, Mexico also held out the prospect of economic opportunity at a time when Utah and Arizona were experiencing growing populations and increasing land costs. Unquestionably, however, it was the United States government's campaign against polygamy that drove most to seek new homes south of the border. From 1885 until the turn of the century, Mormons wishing to live the principle of plural marriage found Mexico to be a place where they could do so with a minimum of disturbance.".
