Zustand: Very good. - A partial sheet of the author's letterhead, approximately 3-1/2 inches high by 5-1/4 inches wide with his address printed in raised lettering at the top, is signed in black ink "Warwick Deeping". The letterhead is slightly unevenly cut with remnants of tape on he verso where it has been removed from an album. Very good. Warwick Deeping [1877-1950] was an English novelist and short-story writer whose best-known novel was "Sorrell and Son" [1925]. After serving in the Royal Army Medical Corps during World War I, Deeping gave up his job as a doctor to become a full-time writer. His early work was dominated by historical romances. His later novels more often dealt with modern life and were critical of many tendencies of twentieth century civilization. His attitude was generally one of passionate individualism, distrustful of both ruling elites and the lower classes who were often presented as a threat to his embattled middle-class protagonists. He was one of the best-selling authors of the 1920s and 1930s.

Good orig. blue cloth. Head of spine frayed, front edge stained. 86 p.; 23 cm. (Studies in the Germanic languages and literatures ; 1) Introduction, p. [13]-25 -- Eccius dedolatus [translation], p. [27]-74 -- Appendix: Willibald Pirckheimer's continuation of Eccius dedolatus [translation], p. [75]-84 -- Bibliography, p. [85]-86. -- Oxford dictionary of the Christian church, 3rd ed., s.v. Pirckheimer, describes `the virulent pamphlet Eccius Dedolatus, now generally acknowledged to be his work.' On the continuation, Best writes: `Among the unpublished manuscripts left by Willibald Pirckheimer at his death is a fragment of a dialogue patterned after Eccius dedolatus. It deals with the cure of a later illness supposedly incurred by Eck on his return from Rome. Eck came back to Germany in August 1520, bringing the bull, Exsurge Domine, that threatened Luther, Pirckheimer, Karlstadt, Adelmann, Spengler, and two others with excommunication. We may safely assume, however, that Pirckheimer did not know of the papal censure at the time he wrote this satire on Eck. When he did become aware of the bull, in October 1520, he went to great lenghts to secure absolution. He would not then have ridiculed Eck as he did in the continuation of Eccius dedolatus. His satire therefore probably dates from September 1520.' (p. [75]). 1st in English edition. Binding is Hardcover.

STORY: written during the era of First-wave feminism and is recognized for its revolutionary feminist politics. Some scholars have criticized the novel as overtly racist and exclusionist. The themes of love, marriage, motherhood, empire, and racialization feature in the novel through the main female character Lyndall's engagements with these issues. Some scholars have argued in favor of the transnational and transracial value of Lyndall's views and their applicability beyond the context of historical South Africa. She describes the differences in how men and women experience love:[Wiki]. SHEPARDSON BOOKSTALL, 20 YEARS OF EXCELLENCE.
