Buch
Zustand: Gut. XIII; 157 S.; Tab.; 22 cm. Gutes Ex.; Umschlag stw. berieben. - Englisch. - Clive Bingley's first book, published six years ago and nowout of print, was a brief descriptive account of book publishing. This new and more detailed work has evolved largely from his experience in developing his own publishing firm since its foundation in 1965. It is therefore predominantly concerned with method, and the principal emphasis throughout is on the financial structure and operation of a book publishing business. There are five chapters, devoted to an analysis of the book industry, the nature of publishing, financial methods of budgeting, forecasting and control, editorial production and sales techniques, and an examination of future trends as they may affect book publishers. This is, therefore, a manual of practice for experienced and would-be publishers, for both of whom the detailed accounts of the financial implications and effects of publishing should be of special interest. In addition it is a coherent exposition of the book industry as a whole, and of the methods and knowledge necessary to participate successfully in it, which should be of value to others connected with the world of books - authors and journalists, booksellers and librarians. The author has spent thirteen years in book publishing, the last six of them running his own firm, which began without capital or employees other than himself and his wife, and is now well established in its own special subject fields. Hardback. Zustand: Very Good. First Edition. Hardback. Dust Jacket. 8vo. pp. 284. 16pp. plates. Original publisher's red cloth lettered white on spine. Crimson illustrated dust jacket lettered white on spine and upper cover. Typed signed letter from Valerie Eliot (T. S. Eliot's widow) to Peter du Sautoy written on headed notepaper from 9 Kensington Court Gardens, London W8 5QE dated 1st August, 1978 and consisting of about 295 words in which she clarifies matters concerning the break between Mrs Millin and T. S. Eliot stating it took place in London and not Johannesburg. She also says that the changing of the word 'jew' to 'Jew' in the anti-Semitic poem 'Burbank with a Baedeker; Bleistein with a Cigar' was made by the printer not by Eliot or Millin when Eliot's 'Collected Poems' were reset. She continues with news of letters sold at Sothebys (Eliot & Pound) and her mother's health. Photocopy of a typed letter with corrections probably addressed to a newspaper in which du Sautoy defends Sarah Gertrude Millin and refers to Rubin's book and Nadine Gordimer's review stating they are 'unduly hard and with less justification.' Two typed signed letters from Clive Bingley to Peter du Sautoy written on headed notepaper from Clive Bingley Ltd Publishers 16 Pembridge Road London W11 the first to du Sautoy's Faber and Faber address and the second to 31 Lee Road Aldeburgh Suffolk dated 25th May and 5th June 1978, both one page in length in which he mentions Rubin's book and where to buy it and suggests all meeting for dinner with Rubin and his wife when they are over. Another typed signed letter from Bingley to du Sautoy written on headed notepaper from 2 Addison Grove London W4 dated 26th July finalising the dinner arrangement and saying he found some letters from Millin written in the early 1960s which he is not sure he should show Rubin, 'she was pretty cuckoo in her last years' (Millin expressed pro-apartheid views). A further interesting two-page typed signed letter from Bingley to du Sautoy on headed notepaper from his Pembridge Road address dated 7th August 1978 in which he goes into his opinions of Millin and the book, 'I had felt that it was a travesty of the person I knew and was deeply fond of.' He says he never saw her as a racist and considers the last chapters of the book concerning Dame Rebecca West's visit to Johannesburg 'unkind and unbalanced.' Photocopy of du Sautoy's response dated 16th August turning down the invitation to dinner, 'I am glad we see eye to eye about Mr (or is it Professor?) Rubin. I am happy to leave Sarah's defence in your hands.'Typed signed letter from David Harrison to Peter du Sautoy at his Aldeburgh address written on headed notepaper from Wildwood House Limited, 29 King Street, London WC2 8JD dated 28th June 1978 and one page in length in which he encloses Rubin's book on Sarah Gertrude Millin. Photocopy of a typed letter from Peter du Sautoy to John Gross, the Editor of the Times Literary Supplement in which he offers to review the book, 'I knew her rather well having sub-edited and severely cut two of her books for Faber and dealt with several others. She became a friend of my family and we saw a good deal of her on her frequent visits to England. Then she seemed to disappear from view and I found this book illuminating in many ways, though in others rather puzzling.' Typed signed response from John Gross written on headed notepaper from the Times Literary Supplement to Peter du Sautoy at his Aldeburgh address dated 31st July apologising for the fact that Nadine Gordimer had already written a review which will appear in the paper shortly. Two typed signed air letters dated 29th January 1970 and 12th February 1970 from I. Isaacson Deputy Librarian at the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg and three photocopied replies from du Sautoy concerning a collection of Millin's correspondence, papers and MSS to be held in the university's archives. Valerie Eliot (1926-2012) second wife and later widow of T. S. Eliot was his most important editor and his literary executor. Peter du Sautoy (1912-1995) joined Faber and Faber in 1946 as poetry editor following T. S. Eliot who was gradually retiring from involvement in the company. He later became a director, then vice-chairman and finally chairman, a post he held from 1971 until his retirement in 1977. Clive Bingley publisher of textbooks on librarianship (died 2017) who with Lionel Leventhal founded the London Book Fair. Sarah Gertrude Millin (1889-1968) South African author who was married to a Supreme Court judge who encouraged her literary ambitions. A couple of rust marks from old paperclips on title page and front free endpaper, dust jacket a little rubbed and nicked at foot of spine. Very good. 094993738X Slight wear to dust jacket.
