Erstausgabe
4to. [42 pp (unnumbered)]. Colour-illustrated title in red & green, colour frontisp., 19 colour plates, colour-illustrated anthropomorphic floral borders around text, illustrated colophon. Tan publisher's cloth, dark brown lettering, colour plate mounted front cover showing children playing at the beach with an umbrella (wear & rubbing to corners, minor soiling front cover, chipping to foot of spine, couple signatures proud), still G copy. First edition of this wonderfully illustrated anthology of anthropomorphic illustrations & humorous verse featuring a barber's pole in top hat, cracker being wooed by a wafer, Mr. Match lighting an oil burner, a battered hat begging from a tightwad wallet strapped with a belt, the Wise Pen, and many others. This was published the same year as Bonte's Christmas Stocking Rhymes, Sandman Rhymes, Tip Top, and his Mother Goose Puzzle Book. He is perhaps best remembered for the decidedly racist and curious ABC in Dixie: A plantation alphabet published with his wife Louise Quarles Bonte in the same year. Bonte (1873-1946), worked as illustrator and cartoonist for Outing Magazine from 1896 to 1900, the New York Herald first as artist, and then art director until 1920, as well as the Sunday editor. He would serve as the art manager for Warner Brothers Motion Pictures from 1923-1931. Worldcat locates 4 copies (Colorado, Library Congress, U of Florida, Wellesley).

Erstausgabe
First Edition. First Edition. 4to. Original color pictorial paper covered boards, red cloth spine. Illustrated endpapers. Wonderful color illustrations throughout of various nefarious anthropomorphic scenes involving combs and pens and shoes and bobbins and many more inanimate objects coming to life in splendid form. Reminiscent of early Denslow, and the subject humor conjures the Golligwog wit. A very scarce colorplate children's book, with no copies found on the net at the time of writing. Corners and edges scuffed, very good.
