The book has loose hinges, shelfwear to the edges and corners of the covers including a tear approx 1/4 inch long at the bottom of the front hinge, a shifted spine, an overall gentle bowing to the book likely from improper storage, and faint smudging to the margins of few pages from use, otherwise the book is in good condition with crisp, unmarked pages, a tight binding, and attractive illustrations throughout. The dustjacket has significant shelfwear to the jacket resulting in creasing, some color loss, and few small tears the largest being approx 1 inch long at the top edge of the back cover, a piece of tape at the top left edge of the front cover to hold together a tear approx 4 inches long, sunfading to the spine, rubbing and surface scratching to both covers, few faint stains, and small scuffed tears to the edge of both jacket flaps, otherwise the dustjacket is in fair condition, intact and attractive, and is now in an archival protective mylar.

The book and its contents are in clean, bright condition. There is a slight slant to the spine of the book. The text pages are clean and bright. The dust jacket has some light edge wear and rubbing to the spine, spine joints and corners. There are a couple of small nicks / edge tears and wrinkling to the top rear spine joint and top rear panel. "With John's encouragement she began painting the local Pomo Indian peoples whom she had known since a child. Her 1891 portrait of a sleeping Pomo baby, entitled "National Thorn," was the first in her series of numbered oil paintings, that grew to over 680 works by the time of her death in 1937. Hudson's reputation as an Indian painter was national during her lifetime. While nearly all her portraits were of Pomo peoples, she is also known for the 26 canvases of Japanese, Chinese, and Hawaiian natives she painted during a year's sojourn in the Hawaiian Islands in 1901, as well as sketches she produced of Pawnee Indians in Oklahoma Territory, circa 1903-04. Though she worked primarily in oils, she also produced lovely watercolors, pen and ink illustrations, and charcoal, pencil, and crayon drawings. Today her work enjoys renewed interest and recognition for its fine and sympathetic portrayals of native peoples. " (From the Grace C. Hudson museum).
