15 dated letters with 13 signed by the author; 2 typed, one of which is half page unsigned on blue note paper and the other 2pp on foolscap signed. 13 in holograph, dated and all but one signed and of between 1 1/4 and 7pp. but largely 2 or so pages of close handwriting on foolscap and A4. With many of the original handwritten mailing envelopes, initialled and dated by Brady on flap and a handful of signed, typed authorisation slips. Ashworth Hospital, Maghull, Merseyside, circa 1993-1999. £5,000.00Several spattered with reddish substance (Brady says coffee), clear and legible handwriting, a few with tatty edges, the majority crisp and clean, Sellotaped areas on envelopes browned.Ian Brady was convicted of the murder and sexual assault of two children and a teenage man in 1966 very largely in collaboration with his girlfriend Myra Hindley. They were later convicted of the murders of two other children. Part of their modus operandi was burying some of their victims in 'beauty spots' in an area of the Pennines called Saddleworth Moor and so they were called the 'Moors Murderers' by the tabloid press of the day. There is a near constant discussion to this day as to where one of the victims is buried on the Moor and an expectation or hope that Brady will reveal where; as happened in 1987 when Hindley gave the police a clue as to the whereabouts of the body of a murdered boy. Hindley died in 2002 having spent her entire life after conviction in prison. Brady was diagnosed as a psychopath in 1987 and removed from the general prison population and placed into the Ashworth Psychiatric Hospital, from where these letters are written.Brian Marriner died in 1999 he was a writer of factual crime and other macabre studies of cannibalism and murder, at the time of these letters he was writing a book about death, some time during this correspondence he was diagnosed with terminal cancer, previous to his literary career he was held at Her Majesty's pleasure for bank robbery. The letters are very dense and though there are gaps they seem to be largely following on from and referring to an ongoing dialogue with Marriner. As such, there is a sense of completeness with this small cache, underlined by the knowledge that Marriner died shortly after the chronologically last letter in hand. The themes are often quite densely woven and are often literary, philosophical and ethical in nature, and full of allusion and quotation from Sade, Tolstoy, Nietzsche et al, and we can only give a flavour of them herein. The correspondence starts with a typed, unsigned, undated letter on blue paper overwritten with "CONFIDENTIAL NOT FOR PUBLICATION" by Brady in red Biro. Brady introduces himself by way of 'Colin' [Wilson], author of The Outsider and a well known writer on crime other subjects, and corrects Marriner on a point of fact. He had attacked a fellow child killer, the so-called 'Cannock Chase Murderer' three times, he in turn retaliated and was chased by Brady and some time later Brady finally assaulted him with a pair of scissors. Citing the prison law of the jungle, Brady suggests that he was worried that Marriner's published account would give the wrong impression that he would not strike back if attacked. He warms him not to publish his letters even though he had a good character reference from Wilson. We will thereafter deal with these letters in chronological sequence. What seems to be chronologically the second letter is also crisscrossed with a red Biro confidentiality notice. In this handwritten letter, Brady opens by stating that Marriner deserves a more substantive reply as a friend of Colin Wilson's. He tells Marriner that it is not sad that he wants to remain incarcerated for the rest of his life because he essentially, in other words, feels much freer as there is no incentive that the authorities can control him with 'carrot and stick' and that he feels indifferent to the contemptible authorities. He replies to Marriner on the idea that the murde.
