Erstausgabe
Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. No Jacket. 1st Edition. 1838 printing. Vol. I only. Frontispiece (folding), 386 pp. Original cloth. Very Good. The Family Library No. 55. English translation of Lettres a une Princesse d'Allemagne sur Divers Sujets de Physique & de Philosophie (1st French ed., 1768-68-72), a series of letters sent by Euler to the Princess of Anhalt-Dessau who Euler had tutored in physics. Printing and the Mind of Man (No. 196) notes: 'His 'Lettres à une Princess d'Allemagne' . . . had an immense success and profoundly influenced contemporary philosophy.' It ran to twelve editions in the original French, nine in English, six in German, four in Russian, and two in both Dutch and Swedish. There were also Italian, Spanish, and Danish editions. Vol. II of the edition offered here, also first published in 1833, was published that year as Vol. 56 in The Family Library under the J & J Harper imprint [there is a copy for sale online if someone wants to buy mine too and make a mixed set]; by 1838 it had changed to Harper & Brothers. In spite of its fame, this book is uncommon in all languages and all editions, even the Arno reprint.

Erstausgabe
First thus edition. Bound in period Half calf over marbled boards, gilt stamped spine title, speckled edges. 18mo (15cm). pp. [2] blank, [i] title, [i] blank, xi, [4] 14-240, [2] blank. Very Good/In mylar protector. Rubbed corners, light foxing progressing internally. By 1838, Brewster was appointed Principal of the United College of St. Salvador and St. Leonard, St. Andrews, &c, &c and had already made significant contributions in physics, astronomy and optics, had invented the kaleidoscope and made improvements to the stereoscope and British lighthouses. This title is listed among his larger separate works and made it into Harper's "Family Library" barely one year after the first London edition of 1841. Promotional publisher letter on the Family Library, May, 1841 follows title page (mentioning Brewster, but with no title list or series number). The Harpers catalog of April, 1859 listing indicates it was No. 116 ("of nearly 200" total), issued in muslin for 45 cents. Scarce early printing.

Part of two page letter, bottom half, 20 x 12.5cm, good conditipon. With a few notes added by recipient (presumably) and another, including brief information about Brewster. The saurviving text is as follows: "[.] you had expressed your [omissions] save specimens for me, otherwise I could [omissions] used the freedom of making this application. | I have been occupied more than two years in examining the optical structure of Crystals of all kinds; but I have expeienced the greatest difficulty in procuring specimens for investigation. As I am now cpompleting my paper on the subject for the Royal Society I am particularly anxious to [loss of text till subscription] I am Sir | Yours Most Faithfully | D Brewster." Short list follows in another hand: "Capt Colby | Drawing Room | Tower", presumably the Colby who features in Brewster's encyclopedia entry "Pendulum"), conceivably Brewster's correspondent. See Wikipedia, Thomas Frederick Colby, In 1815 Colby worked from Tower [NOTE list in text] map office, but in 1816 17 he was again in the field, carrying the triangulation round the eastern coast towards Orkney.s and Shetland, and in the latter year, in conjunction with Gardner, measured the base-line of Belhelvie Links, near Aberdeen, the only base-line in Scotland. He was also engaged in observations in Shetland with Édouard Biot, who had been deputed by the Institut de France to make pendulum and other observations there in connection with the prolongation of the arc of the meridian".

1 S., Kl.-8°. Zustand: 0. [An den österr. Chemiker u. - Kl. Eckknick. To James Higgins, Literary and Philosophical Society, Newcastle-upon-Tyne: "[.] Since that time I believe I have published only a treatise on optics in Lardner's Cyclopaedia. I am now engaged in finishing a small Biographic volume entitled The Martyrs of Science on the lives of Galileo, Kepler and Tycho, but particularly on a new and copious Life of Sir Isaac Newton, drawn up from the Family Papers in the possession of the Earl of Portsmouth [.]". David Brester was most noted for his contributions to the field of optics, his inventions include the kaleidoscope and an improved version of the stereoscope. - Slightly spotty, browned and wrinkled; small tear to fol. 2 through breaking the seal.
