Manuskript / Papierantiquität
2pp., 12mo. In good condition, lightly aged. Having just received Buckingham's letter, he writes that he 'cannot but feel much gratified that my letter to Mr Raikes Currie should have in any way attracted the notice of a Gentleman like yourself whose name is so well known in connexion with our literature and our social progress.' He concludes by expressing an interest in the 'undertakings which have engaged, and now engage' Buckingham's attention, and by wishing him every success. Beneath the signature, in a contemporary hand, is 'Author of "One Manifold"' ('One, Manifold, or, System; Introductory Argument, in a Letter addressed to Raikes Currie, Esq., M.P.', published in 1848).

[Likely Albany, New York, July 3, 1838]. [3]pp. Sm. 8vos. Wax seal; small, contemporary newspaper clipping attached. Folds; brief staining and edge wear; Very Good. Letter written during the American travels of British journalist James Silk Buckingham (1786-1855), discussing an article to be published in the Albany Evening Journal, a postponement of his public lectures, and a desire to obtain a copy of the "Shaker Bible." After serving as a member of Parliament from 1832 to 1837, Buckingham traveled extensively through North America. Writing to "Thos. Weed Esq. or Editor of the Albany Journal"-likely meaning publisher Thurlow Weed (1797-1882) of the Albany Evening Journal, Buckingham begins: I" know not whether the accompanying 'Contribution' will be deemed worthy of a place in your Journal of this afternoon. If it stands I shall be glad to see it receive that honor, & in that case would wish 50 copies extra of that Journal to be printed off for me and charged to my account. The lines have the merit of freshness as they were only thought of yesterday afternoon." In his one-page post script, Buckingham asks for a wanted advertisement to be published. He needed a copy of the "Shaker Bible" -The Testimony of Christ's Second Appearing (Albany, 1810, Second Edition) by Benjamin Seth Youngs.
