A slightly soiled but sound copy with occasional light pencil marginalia by an anonymous reader; spine sunned, with dulling to gilt; pencil annotation and pasted-in obituary inside front cover; just Very Good. Front panel (only) of original dustwrapper laid in. A quintessential American memoir of the heroic colonizer type. Burnham (1861-1947), born on a Sioux Indian reservation in Minnesota, saw service as a scout in the U.S. Indian Wars, then emigrated to South Africa where he became a Major in the British Army, leading troops in both the Matabele and Boer Wars. Returning to the U.S., he formed an elite company to fight in WW1 (it never saw service), then struck it rich when he discovered oil in California. H. Rider Haggard said of Burnham, "in real life he is more interesting than any of my heroes of romance.".
