Cloth. Zustand: Good +. No Jacket. First Edition. The title continues: Geographical Descriptions, Early Customs, Biographical Sketches, &c. &c. with an Introduction Containing A Brief History of the State, from the Discovery of the Mississippi River Down to the Year 1817, to the Whole of Which is Added An Appenxix, Containing Tabular Views., &c. Rebound in red cloth. A very good copy except as noted. Foxing throughout. Penciled notations on both side of front end page and also the rear. Done in pencil and almost impossible to read now. Some staining along the edge but not affecting the text. Interesting ownership: Originally this book belonged to J. J. Peterson in 1863. It was passed on to his son Earl Peterson who was living in Gahon, Ohio in 1959 and was about 75 years of age at the time. It was given to Harold H. Faine by Earl Peteson on 11-27-58. See Howes B1064: "2000 copies printed, 1300 burned." Thomson 145. Field 221. Decker 245: "the history of Seneca County is very carefully compiled, principally from the experience of the early settlers themselves." Much information on the Wyandot and Seneca Indians, the various Indian wars and treaties, the impact on the region by the American Revolution and of course, the infamous Simon Girty." Additional information on Consul W. Butterfield can be found on pages 94 in William Coyle;s Ohio Authors and their Books 1796-1950 (printed in 1962).

Considerable foxing, but a good solid copy of a scarce book. Original brown cloth (rubbed, corners bumped), gilt spine title. (#5889).
