[Tragedy] FIRST PARIS EDITION. Octavo (18 x 11cm), pp.[4]; 271; [1]. Brown half calf, Shell marbled paper over boards. Grey label with gilt titles, gilt bands, and blind-tooled designs to spine. Edges speckled black. Blue endpapers. Original bookmarking ribbon loosely inserted. Interior bright, though moderately spotted and foxed throughout. Endpapers toned with some discolouration. Bookplate to front paste-down, faint pencil marks to rear paste-down. Top edge toned. Some rubbing to marbled boards, light soiling to calf. Minor wear to joints and binding extremities. Very good. After visiting the Palazzo Ducale and glimpsing the shrouded portrait of the disgraced former doge Marino Faliero, Byron conceived this drama presenting the story behind his failed coup d'etat in 1355. The ploy is widely thought to have begun when the patrician youth Michele Steno carved an insult about Faliero's wife into the doge's throne.

Buch
Hardcover. Zustand: Good. No Jacket. IN Hebrew. 138 pages. 217 x 145 mm. Cain is a dramatic work by Byron published in 1821. In Cain, Byron attempts to dramatize the story of Cain and Abel from Cain's point of view. Cain is an example of the literary genre known as closet drama. The play commences with Cain refusing to participate in his family's prayer of thanksgiving to God. Cain tells his father he has nothing to thank God for because he is fated to die. As Cain explains in an early soliloquy, he regards his mortality as an unjust punishment for Adam and Eve's transgression in the Garden of Eden, an event detailed in the Book of Genesis. Cain's anxiety over his mortality is heightened by the fact that he does not know what death is. At one point in Act I, he recalls keeping watch at night for the arrival of death, which he imagines to be an anthropomorphic entity. The character who supplies Cain with knowledge of death is Lucifer. Byron was a leading English poet in the Romantic Movement along with Keats and Shelley. He traveled extensively in Europes, spending years in Italy and Greece. With his aristocratic indulgences, flamboyant style along with his debts, and a string of lovers he was the constant talk of society. In 1823 he joined the Greeks in their war of Independence against the Ottoman Empire, both helping to fund and advise on the war's conduct.

Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. Three volume 'set' of Byron's works assembled by the nineteenth-century English politician John Hodgetts Hodgetts Foley. Having acquired the third volume of John Murray's 1819 three volume 'Works of Lord Byron' he bound later works (and one earlier) to almost match. While all have floral stamped borders, the patterns are not exactly the same. Similarly the spines are all divided into six compartments with very similar gilt patterns and green titles. All three are different sizes. All three contain his bookplate. Together they offer evidence of one contemporary reader and collector's engagement with Byron's published works. The volume labeled 'Byron's Tragedies' contains Murray's 1821 edition of Sardanapalus, The Two Foscari and Cain. The volume labeled 'Byron's Poems' comprises four separately published works: English Bards, and Scotch Reviewers. Fourth Edition. London: James Cawthorn, 1810. Werner. London: John Murray, 1823. The Island, or Christian and his Comrades. London: John Hunt, 1823. The Age of Bronze; or, Carmen Seculare et Annus Haud Mirabilis. Second Edition. London: John Hunt, 1823. Wear to extremities, occasional foxing.
