Soft cover. Zustand: Very Good. Small folio, 44 manuscript pages, portions of orginal plain gray paper wrappers, entries written in ink, in a legible hand, and dated 8 November 1833- 24 June 1834, very good condition. While the journal is not signed, internal evidence indicates that the writer was Dugald Cameron, Jr., the son of Dugald Cameron, land agent for the Pulteney Association in Steuben County, New York. The Pulteney Association was a small group of British investors who in 1792 purchased a large portion of the Western New York land tract known as the Phelps and Gorham Purchase. The author of this journal was the owner of the local saw mill, and it is known that Dugald Cameron, Jr, came to Hornellsville in 1817 and went into the lumbering business. The journal mentions men building a mill race, working on a dam, sawing and delivering lumber, etc., as well as doing farm work, Dugald Cameron, Jr., was also a farmer. Other evidence shows the writer to have been a Justice of the Peace, hearing cases, attending court, filing summons, etc, Cameron, was known to have been a Justice of the Peace. Dugald Cameron, Jr. died in 1867, at Bath, New York, where he had moved about 1847, thus he was alive and living in Hornellsville when this journal was kept (1833-1834) and that he lived just outside the village, Dugald Cameron, Jr. is known to have built his saw mill just north of the village of Hornersville. From an 1836 Gazetteer, we learn that, Hornellsville was separated from Canisteo on 1 April 1820. It is 236 miles south west of Albany. The Canisteo river runs S.E. across the northern half of the town. Hornellsville was a post village. It is named for George Hornell, its first settler. The town lies on the road from Bath to Angelica, 20 miles from Bath. In 1836, Hornellsville was made up of 50 dwellings, 1 Presbyterian Church, 1 Methodist Church, 3 taverns, 3 stores, 1 tannery, 1 grist mill, 1 carding and cloth dressing mill and 1 saw mill, thus the author of this journal, is the only saw mill operator in the town leading again our identification of the writer as Dugald Cameron, Jr. Cameron writes often about his saw mill and of work done upon it or in connection with it. He also mentions the new mill he was constructing, however on January 4th, 1834, the new mill went up in flames: "January 4th That Sorrowful Day. Clark sawed I went to the Village to try a cause between - Alanson Collar and William Goff & Cameron Goff cause adjoined to the 13th. The boys & bill thrashed & cleared lots. Clark put out the fire with snow. Vincent put on water. I went into the mill when I come home & there was no sign of fire to be seen. I went to be between 9 and ten o'clock at night, looked over to the mill no light to be seen there, they boys & girls went up to Leanders on a visit they came home about midnight, no appearance of fire then. Then, about one o'clock my wife was awakened by the light that shone into the window behold the new saw mill was all on fire. It was hard scene to me to see my hard labor $1000.00 there wasted in the flames in a short time & no help for it my wife and the girls went into the water and I worked with all the strength 2 or 3 hours, very cold night it was, the neighbors, both men & women strove hard against the fire and saved boards and plank that would of burnt up to the amount of 4 or 5 hundred dollars. I felt bad you may expect at that time to see the waste of my hard labor & can't not stop it from going. Sawmill turning lathe and my logway & lumber all on fire at once $1000.000 would not make up the loss to me my feelings I cannot describe to none but those that have experienced something of the same matter." An interesting journal, showing the day to day activities of Cameron's saw mill, his farming enterprise, and his activities as Justice of the Peace, in the early years of Hornellsville, New York. Handwritten.
