Bound in blind embossed brown cloth wilt gilt titles on spine; boards are rubbed, with some loss of cloth at extremities; spine cloth is split at both gutters, but present and adhering to book. Pages toned with some spotting, including to the frontis engraving of Campbell. 3 pp of ads bound in front, between front free endpaper and front pastedown; text unmarked . With the ownership signature of "G. S. Wardwell, Cambridge, Aug 4th,1856" George Smith Wardwell, 1829-1895, was a member of the Harvard class of 1855, and later a judge of the Municipal Court of Buffalo, New York, and a member of the inaugural faculty of the Law School of the Unoversity of Buffalo (1891). Wardwell, with his brother William, was a member of the Niagara Baseball Club in 1857, the first organized baseball team to play the game in the City of Buffalo. Pretty gilt dentelles and marbled endpapers. 1878 gift inscription from Margaret Helen Awdry to her brother Walter - family of Wilbert Vere Awdry, creator of 'Thomas the Tank Engine'. Offsetting to title page, foxing to prelims and rear blanks, a few spots to page edges/outer margins. Contents o/w clean without inscriptions, foxing or other markings. An attractive copy. 465 pp. 37 woodcuts from designs by Harvey; portrait frontis of Thomas Campbell (Sir Thomas Lawrence and W. H. Watt). Notes and a biographical sketch by Rev. W. A. Hill. No publication date but preface dated August 1851. 12mo - over 6¾ - 7¾" tall. All orders professionally packed, tracked and/or signed for, and insured.

A later edition of this work in a full morocco binding, with intricate gold tooling to the boards, spine and square. All edges gilt and decoratively gauffered. Binder's stamp of Webb & Hunt, Liverpool, to the verso of the front free end paper. Illustrated with twenty engraved vignettes from designs by J. M. W. Turner. Collated, complete.A beautiful collection of the poetry of the Scottish poet Thomas Campbell (1777-1844), edited with notes by the Reverend W. A. Hill. Campbell was best known for his didactic poem 'Pleasures of Hope', written in traditional heroic couplets. He was also known for his patriotic war songs 'Ye Mariners of England', 'The Soldier's Dream', 'Hohenlinden' and 'Battle of the Baltic'. All of these poems, and many more poetic works including his translations, are included in this anthology. In a full morocco binding. Externally generally smart, though faded to the spine, with insect damage causing small losses to the lower corner of each board. Joints are a little rubbed. Occasional small mark to the boards. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright with the odd spot. Very Good. book.
