Leather bound hardback, engraved half title, decorative capitals, 176 pages. The book is bound in embossed full morocco with gilt page edges, there is some rubbing to the extremities, it is sound with everything well bound in. The rear of the half ti tle has an elegant inscription. There are pencil notes os dates and places where sung throughout.

Zustand: Fair. 319 pages. No dust jacket. Green cloth with gilt decoration and lettering. Pages are moderately tanned and thumbed at the edges, with creased corners and foxing. Hinges are cracked, with some exposed netting and a loose binding. Boards have been moderately rub worn. Noticeable shelf wear to corners, spine and edges. Corners are bumped and a little frayed Spine ends are crushed, with noticeable splits and chips. Tanning to spine and edges. Boards are bowed. Book has a forward lean. Externally generally smart, with light patches of rubbing to the spine, joints and extremities. Ink inscription to the front blanks. Internally firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean. All edges gilt with recurring gauffered star and circle motif; gilt dentelles and marbled endpapers. Silk placemarker. Spine very slightly sunned; gift inscription dated 1856 to first blank and a little scattered foxing, mainly to prelims. A Near Fine copy. Contents include "Politeness and Subordination", "Discipline of the Heart" and "The Object of Life" with an emphasis on Christian morality. An excellent example in an unusually handsome binding.

Born in London, he was Vicar at St. Brides, Fleet Street from 1835, and for a short time Dean of Rochester. The Widow of Naïn, his best-known work, was first published in 1819, while Dale was still an undergraduate at Cambridge.
