Buen estado. // Primera edición// «Pertenecía David Ley a esa ya casi perdida clase de hispanistas ingleses para los que todo lo español les es cercano: el paisaje, la cocina, los cafés, las gentes. Fui yo quien le animé a que escribiera sus recuerdos literarios españoles: "La costanilla de los diablos", libro fundamental para conocer cuáles fueron los problemas y las inquietudes de los escritores españoles de posguerra. Tan singular hispanista vino a Madrid para trabajar en el Instituto Británico, que dirigía otro singular inglés, Walter Starkie. Aquí vivió hasta 1953, en que pasó a ocupar un lectorado de inglés en la Universidad de Salamanca, reclamado por su Rector, Antonio Tovar (.) Tuvo trato con cuantos poetas pululaban por aquel Madrid, aún sin rascacielos de los años cuarenta . Acudió a la tertulia de Baroja, al Fénix, donde iban tanto los poetas de "Garcilaso" como los de la revista "Corcel" y terminó en el Gijón, en las cuchipandas de la "Juventud Creadora", al lado de Cela y de Rafael Montesinos. Otro fruto de nuestra colaboración fue "Historia de Cardenio", escrita al alimón entre Shakespeare y John Fletcher, traducida y prologada por él. Deja escritos, entre otras obras, "Poemas para España", "El gracioso en el teatro de la Península" y "Shakespeare para españoles", así como numerosas traducciones de poetas españoles. Y, en mis manos, y aún inéditos, la segunda parte de sus recuerdos literarios, con el título de "La cueva de Salamanca", que reeditaré algún día, y que le convierte en uno de los memorialistas más apasionantes de estos años, entre los cuarenta y los sesenta, tan poco estudiados y conocidos aún» (José Esteban) - En el capítulo «Poetas españoles en Londres» cuenta una visita a Cernuda.
