The fascinating story of the pioneers who explored vast regions of Central Asia, India and Tibet to create maps, and spy out the country for military and geographical reasons. Although the ultimate prize of the Great Game played out between Great Britain and Imperial Russia in the 19th century was India, most of the intrigue and action took place along its northern frontier in Afghanistan, Turkestan and Tibet. Maps, and knowledge of the enemy were crucial elements in Britain's struggle to defend the 'jewel in the crown'. The Great Trigonometrical Survey of India had been founded in the 18th century, with the aim of creating a detailed map of the country. While most people today are readily able to identify the world's highest mountain few know of the man, George Everest, whom it was named after, or the accomplishment that earned him this singular honour. Under his leadership, the Survey of India mapped the Great Arc, which was then lauded as 'one of the greatest works in the whole history of science', though it cost more in monetary terms and human lives than many contemporary Indian wars? Much of the work of the Survey was undertaken by native Indians, known as Pundits, who were trained to explore, spy out and map Central Asia and Tibet. They did this at great personal risk and with meagre resources, while travelling entirely on foot. They would be the first to reveal the mysteries of the forbidden city of Lhasa; and discover the true course of Tibet's mighty Tsangpo River. They were the greatest group of explorers the world has seen in recent history yet they remain the classic unsung heroes of the British Raj. The story of these extraordinary pioneers who explored much of Asia during the 19th century to fill in large portions of its map, and spy out the region for military reasons is often forgotten, but Riaz Dean's vivid account of their exploits, their adventurous spirit and their tenacity in the face of great adversity, all set within the context of the Great Game and the Survey of India, will finally bring them the attention they deserve. AUTHOR: Riaz Dean works as a Business Improvement Consultant. He is an engineer by profession, and also holds an MBA degree. He lives in Wellington, New Zealand now, after living and working (for a multinational) in Australia, Germany and USA in the last decade. Riaz is a current member of the NZ Society of Authors and the NZ Cartographical Society. As well as being an avid reader of historical exploration. Hardcover. Zustand: new. Hardcover. For over 2,000 years, the location of the Stone Tower, mid-point of the ancient Silk Road, has remained a mystery. This book traces the search for its true site, arguing for its identification as Sulaiman-Too mountain in Kyrgyzstan, and explores its significance in ancient trade, geography, and cultural history. For over 2,000 years, the precise location of the Stone Tower-the midpoint of the ancient Silk Road, where caravans traveling between Europe and Asia paused to rest, trade, and resupply-has remained a mystery. Claudius Ptolemy (AD 90168), an Alexandrian, was an astronomer and geographer. In his third work Geographia, he described the Stone Tower, a special place high up in the mountains in a region referred to as the Roof of the World, which marked the mid-point on a complex network of overland routes collectively known today as the Silk Road. Scholars have long debated its location, but no work until now has focused solely on identifying this elusive site. This book explores the search for the Stone Tower and its significance in ancient geography, cartography, and trade. Determining its location not only resolves a historical puzzle but could also lead to the discovery of other lost settlements described in Ptolemy's Geographia. The book is divided into three sections: the origins of the Silk Road, the historical forces that led to the tower's prominence, and the precise identification of its location. The author demonstrates why Ptolemy's text alone is insufficient to pinpoint the site and introduces four key criteria that the location would have logically needed to satisfy for it to have become such a prominent meeting place and caravanserai. He argues that the Stone Tower corresponds to the Sulaiman-Too in Kyrgyzstan, the holiest mountain in Central Asia. This site was a key meeting point for traders and holds significant spiritual and cultural importance, with connections to Zoroastrianism and the Sasanian Empire. By solving this ancient riddle, the book sheds new light on Silk Road history, offering fresh perspectives on trade, geography, and the civilizations that shaped this vital network of commerce and cultural exchange. AUTHOR: Riaz Dean has travelled much of the area described in this book, including the two halves of what was once Turkestan, and to the Roof of the World which divides them. He collects old maps and books about the exploration of this region, and has written of the ancient Silk Road and its mapping. Born and raised in the Fiji Islands, he subsequently lived on three continents before settling in New Zealand. 24 b/w photographs For over 2,000 years, the location of the Stone Tower, mid-point of the ancient Silk Road, has remained a mystery. Hardcover. Zustand: New. A path traversed by caravans laden with silk, spices and much more besides, the old Silk Road influenced trade, religions, cultures and economies across Europe, Asia and far beyond. In his latest book, Riaz Dean blends the best of this region's history and geography with ancient cartography to solve a 2,000-year-old riddle that has perplexed scholars for centuries: Where was the Stone Tower that the great geographer Claudius Ptolemy had written about? This highly significant but now-lost landmark represented the midpoint and thumping heart of the Silk Road, as merchant caravans plied their wares between the Occident and the Orient. From the significance of the Heavenly Horses to the intrigues of geopolitics and war between clans and kingdoms, Dean brings to life the legendary Silk Road even as his evocative narrative and meticulous research pinpoints the Stone Tower's probable location somewhere by the so-called Roof of the World.
