Hardcover. Zustand: Fine. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Fine. Second Edition. 295 pages; Clean and tight in original decorative yellow cloth binding in bright pictorial dustjacket. Limited edition of only 2000 copies. Second edition of OCLC: 559338314 Includes wonderful color plates depicting the Baroque altarpieces found in Venezuela. Though not a comprehensive inventory of the altarpieces made during the Colonial period in Venezuela, this book presents an excellent sampling of those with the most significant characteristics, created by the most representative masters, and those that we classify as popular works. Carlos F. Duarte presents serious research where the erudite and dialectic blend harmoniously. The complete process that gave rise to the appearance of retables in the country is described. The architectural character of the design of altarpieces has inspired many facades of religious buildings. Duarte underlines the differences that exist between Venezuelan altarpieces and those of Mexico and Peru. "The images, whether painted or sculpted, always retain their own individuality. Although they form part of the work itself, they are not to be confused with them. The case is different with the exhuberant Mexican or Peruvian altarpieces, where the painted or sculpted works merge with the wood carving, forming an invisible piece, so to speak. For this reason, it can be affirmed that the altarpieces of Venezuela have their own characteristics".

Encuadernación de tapa dura. Zustand: New. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Nuevo. 294 pages. 38 black and white illustrations, 117 color illustrations. Hard cloth cover. "This is not a catalogue of all the retables made during the Colonial period in Venezuela, it is simply a sampling of those that contain the most significant characteristics, created by the most representative masters, and those that we classify as popular works, invested many times with an awkwardness of interpretation which, even though they indicate an exisiting mental distance between the execution and comprehension of the models, expose a transforming ingenuousness full of archaistic charm and, at the same time, a naive sensitivity." Carlos F. Duarte presents the "History and Evolution of Retables in the Province of Venezuela". It is serious research where the erudite and dialectic blend harmoniously. The complete process that gave rise to the appearance of retables in the country is described. This phenomenon has been written into the cabinetmaking of the Spanish period, in which "the section referring to altar construction deserves special attention". In Venezuela, the expression of this craft's major significance is found precisely in that type of furnishing. Paradoxically, the markedly architectonic character of its designs has inspired more than a few facades of religious buildings. Duarte underlines the differences that exist between our retables and those of Mexico, or Peru: "The images", he says, "whether painted or sculpted, always retain their own individuality. Although they form part of the work itself, they are not to be confused with them. The case is different with the exhuberant Mexican or Peruvian retables, where the painted or sculpted works merge with the wood carving, forming an invisible piece, so to speak. For this reason, it can be affirmed that the retables of Venezuela have their own characteristics". Size: 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall. Book.

Encuadernación de tapa dura. Zustand: New. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Nuevo. 240 pages, 117 color - 162 black and white illustrations. Hard semi-cloth cover. The Caracas Metropolitan Cathedral continues to be one of the most important monuments in the city of Caracas. It suffered partial destruction during the devastating 1812 earthquake, and, during the War of Independence, further damage was wrought. In spite of those inconveniences, the Cathedral's architecture and some of its furniture, sculpture, paintings and religious objects made of gold still reflect the splendor it once knew, particularly during the period from the latter part of the 17th century into the first decade of the 19th. In this book, the history of this important National Monument is scrupulously narrated. Size: 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall. Book.
