Traces of a previous label at the foot of the front free endpaper, as well as the code "S-1002" written in pen. JUN 1983 stamped in blue ink to the head of the rear free endpaper. No other marks or writing to be found. Glossy black-and-white photographs throughout. Overall very good condition. This book is from the collection of Thomas Lovejoy. Dr. Lovejoy was an influential ecologist, field biologist, and activist; former head of the Amazon Biodiversity Center, World Wildlife Fund, and advisor to the United Nations and Smithsonian Institution. He is credited with introducing the term 'biological diversity' to the main stream environmental movement. In addition, he was a passionate collector of books on the natural world. An interesting narrative of travels on the eastern slope of the Andes in the Amazon jungles of Peru, with the original purpose to ascertain the feasibility of aerial transportation in the remote areas. The author describes the area including the Muratos Indians from the Pastaza river, with his illustrations including some shrunken heads. The second edition of 1924 had only half the illustrations.
