Hardcover. Zustand: Fair. 184 pages, hardback (green cloth, the spine lettered in gold gilt), an almost good copy, but we've downgraded to 'Fair' as there's some marginalia, which is in pencil, and we will not be rubbing out.

BENJAMIN HOADLY (1676-1761) was an English clergyman, who was successively Bishop of Bangor of Hereford, of Salisbury, and finally of Winchester. He is best known as the initiator of the Bangorian Controversy. These letters are in reply to Hoadly's sermon; delivered on 31 March 1717 to George I of Great Britain on 'The Nature of the Kingdom of Christ'. His text was John 18:36, 'My kingdom is not of this world,' and from that Hoadly deduced, supposedly at the request of the king himself, that there is no Biblical justification for any church government of any sort. He identified the church with the kingdom of Heaven-it was therefore not of this world, and Christ had not delegated His authority to any representatives. **Will be well-packed for posting/shipping**. 8vo.
